You know damn right the "choice" inside a religious family is a fantasy. And I'm talking from personal experience. It's mostly "this way or the highway". All people raised inside a religious community are brainwashed because we never get to CHOOSE to be part of it. Suppose you got into Islam as an adult, congratulations. Most of us didn't.

If you think women born into a religious country and culture are not capable of choice, then you have to apply this same logic to all women born into social norms and expectations, which means none of us have a choice.

When we're born nobody is presenting us a list of all the religions + atheism and ask us to choose your favorite path, we're all born to a certain situation.

Your only free will choice is to either convert to another religion or to become an atheist.

The problem with the mindset of covering the body in religion is that it's not a choice in the first place, it's a rule, there's a certain logic and thought behind it, made by men for women, not for their freedom, but to limit it as much as they can, to control them, to dehumanize them.

You can't tell me that a young girl in school is "choosing" to cover her body, she was influenced since her birth do it, for her god, for "respecting her body", but it's really just to control her freedom.

And honestly, we're not talking now about going in bikini, we're talking about going out with a t-shirt and bare arms and bare hair, like the most basic thing.

We're talking about women getting arrested and even murderer because the didn't cover their hair well enough.

 

I mean this is for all men, wear a hijab and cover all your body in the summer and then tell me if it's a choice.

Men get hurt by these traditions and beliefs they're unable to consent to as well tbh. Most of the earth's population is walking around with a mutilated penis due to religion and they absolutely didn't get to choose that.

Yup, my grandparents  (both sides) sued my parents when I was a baby, less than a month old, because my parents didn't want to circumcise me, my grandparents won and my parents were forced to do it to me. I never had a relationship with them because of that.

I am against draconian laws and banning things that are not harmful, a woman should have the right to wear whatever she wants

Some of the worst things have happened because people use twisted arguments like "The end justifies the means" So even if you feel like this is progressive or a step in the right direction, I still can't agree with such heavy handed and restrictive measures

Its linked to Lebanon's independence and it's relatively balanced (at least during the relevant time period) christian & muslim populations. The settlement between Christian & Muslim lebanese independence activists was that the Presidency would always be Maronite Christian by convention & the PM always be Muslim (i believe Sunni to be precise but could be wrong!). And parliament would be split 50:50. 

Part of the later civil war peace deal was that such religious division of political roles would be ended and a fully secular system would kick in. But this has never actually been implemented by any political leader since the end of the civil war.

You say you are talking from personal experience, yet your personal experience shows that you made the choice to leave Islam, so no your personal experience proves my point.

You have the choice to leave your family, and you have a choice to stay and conform to the family system, and most people choose to stay because its easy or it fits them. Thats not brainwashing, its a choice.

If we apply your logic on everything, then we are all brainwashed, because we are all born into certain expectations and pressures by society, family, and government.
