Tajikistan, A Muslim Country, Bans Hijab & Public Eid Celebrations

The Tajik parliament's upper chamber, the Majlisi Milli, approved a bill on June 19 banning "alien garments" and children's celebrations for two major Islamic holidays -- Eid al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha, known as idgardak.
 

The bill, approved on May 8 by the lower chamber, the Majlisi Namoyandagon, mostly targets the hijab, or Islamic head scarf, and other traditional items of Islamic clothing, which started coming to the Central Asian nation in recent years from the Middle East and have been associated with Islamic extremists by officials.
 

The bill sparked controversy among the mostly Muslim population of the tightly controlled former Soviet republic.

Whats the ideological reason behind this? The only Muslim countries I know that act like this are countries influenced heavily influenced by France. Or if they are Socialist leaning..

Tunisia is a country thats all Muslim, but they do have laws similar to this, and they go out of their way to ban Islamic law and clothing.

70% of Lebanon are Muslims, but its mandatory to have a Christian president.

Central Asian countries (and Azerbaijan) have some of the strictest regulations among Muslim majority countries regarding secularism so I'm not surprised. The regimes there are incredibly corrupt and are basically generational dictatorships and they perceive the only thing that could topple them is an Islamic revolution.

That being said, in my own country (Turkey, I think the first Muslim-majority country to embrace secularism) a certain type of headscarves were introduced in the 1960's from Pakistan and it was became the symbol of a more orthodox leaning understanding of Islam. The government banned its usage in public and it became a huge controversy and is one of the main reasons why our current disgusting ultra-conservative government assumed power some two decades ago and held on to it for so long. This will only deepen the rift between the local population and the government elites and I can't see it end well.

I personally do not endorse that anyone MUST be covering any part of their body because religion commands it and I can't help myself but feel angst when I see a 6 year old girl in a hijab but the way to go is never to legally restrict it as it causes a myriad of other issues (parents do not allow their children to attend school as they cannot cover their head, for instance).

Lebanon had a way higher Christian population percentage when the country was first founded and its constitution was codified but many Christian families emigrated for economic reasons as well as the Lebanese civil war and sectarian strife in the country, also incredible numbers of mostly Muslim Palestinian refugees arrived later on hence the demographic shift. I believe they haven't held an official census in decades as its results could cause chaos. That specific regulation is probably the messiest form of government in modern history and it lead to Lebanon being a failed state. It's such a shame because Lebanon could have been the best country in the Middle East if they hadn't had to live by such a terrible arrangement.

If you are asking about Lebanon, its mainly because of negotiations during a long civil war. But Muslims do share strong legal power in government with Christians.

On one hand we have countries like Iran who's forcing it and on the other hand countries like Tajiskistan who bans it.

I just wish women could do wtf they want, because they want to and not because the government tells them, their men-handled religion, or their husband or father.

You can say as much as you want that it's a choice, but to grow into a religion and it's laws and traditions is never a choice, especially for women, not just in Islam but in every religion, covering your body is also in orthodox Judaism.

So you dont believe adults can make choices? we are all effected by our environment, but at the end of the day, we all have the choice.

If you think women born into a religious country and culture are not capable of choice, then you have to apply this same logic to all women born into social norms and expectations, which means none of us have a choice.

I find it weird people are reacting to this positively on this site... not that I expect much but shouldn't a woman get to choose what she wants to wear? This law is just another form of oppression made by men to control women.

I'm pretty sure @river said right in his first sentence that you should let women do what they want. If a Muslim woman believes they will have a closer relationship to God by wearing a head covering, then they should be allowed to do it, just as other Muslim women should not have to be forced or shamed to wear one.

I'm shocked and so happy. I think it should be a choice, but also, religions don't have options for girls and women so...
