Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Loses In 1st Round Of Libertarian Party's Presidential Nom

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was eliminated from contention for the Libertarian Party’s presidential nomination during the party’s convention Sunday.

In a surprise move earlier Sunday, Kennedy was put up for consideration as a nominee to represent the party in 2024, but he was eliminated in the first round of voting after receiving support from 19 delegates, or just 2.07%.

Kennedy, who spoke at the party’s national convention in Washington, DC, on Friday, was nominated by a delegate Sunday on the convention floor, where his candidacy was met with boos from other delegates.

Donald Trump was also nominated on the convention floor Sunday, but Libertarian Party Chair Angela McArdle ruled the former president was not qualified because he did not submit nominating papers. Trump spoke Saturday at the convention, where he was loudly and consistently booed, particularly when he asked attendees to “nominate me or at least vote for me.”

Trump received votes from six delegates as a write-in candidate. In a rebuke of the former president, adult film actress Stormy Daniels – whose alleged affair with Trump is at the center of his hush money trial in New York – received a vote from one delegate. 

Candidates who received less than 5% of the vote were eliminated in the first round. In all subsequent rounds, the candidate with the lowest vote total will be eliminated.

After Kennedy’s elimination, he urged Libertarians to back his campaign even though “we may not agree on every downstream issue.”

Tim O’Brien, a Libertarian delegate from New Jersey, said he felt Kennedy was trying to use the party for his own gain without respecting its values.

Kennedy, a former Democrat, began courting Libertarian officials even before he left his party to run as an independent, meeting with McArdle in July and February to discuss their shared beliefs.

The Libertarian ticket was seen as a possible pathway for Kennedy to circumvent ballot-access hurdles and take advantage of the party’s access to ballots in dozens of states. Kennedy is on the ballot in six states so far, compared with 38 states for the Libertarians.

Trump and Kennedy in recent weeks have ramped up their attacks on each other, as the independent’s White House bid is increasingly viewed by the former president’s advisers as a potential problem in an election expected to be decided by a narrow margin in a handful of states.

Kennedy’s support in national surveys has reached double digits – at 16% in a CNN poll conducted last month by SSRS – with strong indications that he is siphoning support from both Trump and President Joe Biden.

As the threat has crystalized, so have Trump’s attacks on Kennedy. The former president now regularly attacks Kennedy in public remarks and on social media. Earlier this month, Trump released a lengthy video that labeled Kennedy a “Democrat plant.”

Doesn't really mean much tbh, though I suppose the Libertarian party has been slowly growing over the past 15 years. Bob Barr and Gary Johnson didn't get very far.

The Libertarian Party was an important 3rd option (regardless if you agree with their policies or not) until the Mises Caucus took over. The Mises Caucus is an alt-right entity that is a prime example of entryism. They did lose some influence this year, so hopefully they will be out soon.

I definitely hope to see 3rd, 4th, and 5th parties get more a voice in American politics.

I mean, he’s definitely not an old school JFK Democrat and he also literally has brain worms lol. But I’ll be sure to give the UK some unsolicited political advice in the upcoming election!

Lol, I guess the point I was making is RFK Jr being president, as highly unlikely as it will happen, is the candidate who has the best chance of bringing peace and unity. Plenty of Americans feel the same. Biden being president enrages Republicans and Trump being president enrages Democrats and this causes huge divide, as we have seen since 2016. RFK is the best chance of each side finding some middle ground, because the conflict and division is only going to get worse. He's also against what the World Economic Forum have been pushing... that's a whole other issue but basically they're a group of unelected officials who make plans about how they want to change the world. In a way, its not dissimilar to what a lot of conspiracy theorists call the 'new world order'. One of their slogans has been "you'll own nothing and be happy". But anyway I'm drifting off-topic.

Just wanna clarify this

Anyone but Trump being president enrages Republicans. The exact same divide would be there with RFK, it's just that we would slide even more to the right because he's more of a conservative than Biden is. This is because the American right doesn't actually stand for anything, they just stand against whatever the left stands for.

And it's not just Democrats that get upset at the idea of a second Trump term, it's anybody with a brain

I hear what you are saying.  Just too bad RFK is an anti vacciner from my perspective.

I don’t have many kind observations about RFK or his political stances, and I find support for him confusing. But I’m not clear on where this leaves him in the race. I have a pretty calm vibe about 2024 though. It’s too early for the stress, and nothing is set in stone till election day and polls are pretty unhelpful this early. I care more about the Keys than the polls still.
