I will claim to be an artist or a performer but I know my vocal abilities and I also know my vocal abilities - what they are not. I'm very comfortable when it's my own stuff but other people's music, I don't do well singing."

Why's there such a big expectation for singers to have impressive vocal ranges? If you want that, go to Broadway or an opera house. Not to someone's Spotify page where they're releasing their own music, which is an art form that isn't about vocal ability  I don't even wanna defend JoJo, this is just something that annoys me in stan culture in general

I’m not sure the connection is being made here, though. While you obviously don’t have to be a Whitney or Boyle or whomever to be considered a singer, you definitely should be able to actually sing with a certain degree of ability that constitutes the basis of the art form. If I hand Jojo a mic and ask her to sing something, her first reaction should not be “oh I can’t do that, I don’t sing”. Like…but you are singing on your records? It’s kind of like saying you’re a painter, and I ask you to paint something and you go “well I can’t actually paint, it’s just performative”. 
 

my other issue is that even if she’s not a vocalist, that’s her prerogative of course, but to contribute nothing else to the art at all to compensate is downright disingenuous, ESPECIALLY when she’s going around Hollywood acting like she’s redefining artistry and music. You didn’t write a single word of lyrics, you self-admittedly cannot sing, and now you’re going around claiming to have “invented gay pop”, having a “Britney Spears Slave 4 U” moment, claiming to have redefined the industry in a way no one has before, and you’ve done literally not a single artistic thing to back up those claims. Gaga herself said it best: to make art is not enough, it has to have a perspective or else it’s nothing.
