We’ve all read letters from great artists of past centuries, many times they are aware these things belong to public property.

They will be. This kind of thing is normal when artists of his calibre pass, only super fans or collectors would pay for these things and they're certainly not mistreating them.

A lot of Michael Jackson's private notes were auctioned off and that's how his fans got to know a lot more about who he really was. There's also the reassurance that those pieces will be preserved for history's sake.

I mean, look at it this way. These letters will be kept in climate controlled areas, likely behind glass or inside a container where they'll effectively last forever. And this way, the fans of Tony, Amy, and Gaga get to peek into their personal relationships. It's invasive but also endearing for us.

Otherwise, these letters would undoubtedly be packed away in boxes improperly, tainted by age, until they're eventually discarded.
