British soldiers 'on the ground' in Ukraine, says German military leak

British soldiers are “on the ground” in Ukraine helping Kyiv’s forces fire long-range Storm Shadow missiles, according to a leak in Russian media of a top-secret call involving German air force officers.

The Kremlin said the leak demonstrated the direct involvement of the “collective west” in the war in Ukraine, while former British defence ministers expressed frustration with the German military in response to the revelations.

Released on Friday by the editor of the Kremlin-controlled news channel RT, Margarita Simonyan, the audio recording – confirmed as authentic by Germany – captures Luftwaffe officers discussing how Berlin’s Taurus missiles could be used to try to blow up the Kerch Bridge connecting Russia with occupied Crimea.

During the conversation, Lt Gen Ingo Gerhartz, the head of the Luftwaffe, describes how Britain works with Ukraine on deploying Storm Shadow missiles against targets up to 150 miles behind Russian lines.

“When it comes to mission planning,” the German commander says, “I know how the English do it, they do it completely in reachback. They also have a few people on the ground, they do that, the French don’t.”

Reachback is a military term to describe how intelligence, equipment and support from the rear is brought forward to units deployed on the front, but Gerhartz suggests the British approach is deeper, involving support on site.

The Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said the leaked conversations “once again highlight the direct involvement of the collective west in the conflict in Ukraine” – although on Sunday Germany’s defence minister, Boris Pistorius, accused Moscow of waging “an information war” against the west.

It's a good question. I think we can assume it isn't a lie.

They hacked a phone conversation and Germany confirmed the audio was authentic.

If we had just said we were doing a military exercise and testing, we might have gotten away with it. But the UK's silence is loud right now.

Also, Germany is an ally and wouldn't conspire with Russia to attack another NATO-member state.

I'm not a warmongering kind of person, but a friend shared this story with me and he's worried.

I'm 26, he's 38. He told me that he was born a month after The Chernobyl Disaster and watched 9/11 live on the news, and feels as though the threat of nuclear war has followed his generation his whole life.

I, on the other hand, believe that we create our own reality and that the best way to end a war is to take your attention off of it. I understand not everyone else feels this way and that my views are personal to me.

But I thought I should share this as it has immediate consequences for us and there are UK voters here with the power to change this.

Who are you even referring to? No one in this thread is cheering for this. No one in their right mind wanted Russia to invade Ukraine in the first place. This conflict has created inflation around the world, but especially in Europe. It’s crazy to think anybody feels good about this war, much less cheering for it to escalate.

Who do you think have been the ones advocating for increasingly strong action in Ukraine? One thing leads to another until it is too late. Many so called "progressives" would rather see the world be destroyed in nuclear war than have Russia win in Ukraine and they were the ones harping on and on about how Trump was going to be unstable in foreign policy and cause WWIII😂 Just like those portions of the left that are antisemetic have suddenly become lovers of Hamas despite the fact that they are a criminal group who restrict lgbtq and womens rights.
