NATO Admiral warns of total war with Russia, talks mass conscription in case of need

War has historically been an integral part of human life. It’s not a matter of if, but when. He’s right, in 20 years anything could happen and the conflict doesn’t necessarily need to come from Russia. It could very well start from a disintegration of the EU. And what do you expect when European countries have started electing far right governments. It could happen in Germany again given the current economic trends.

I’m worrying more about the US though. A few far right leaders have been elected in Europe, but other than in Hungary, they don’t or just can’t hold an extremist political line. Western European democracies are imo more politically stable than the US is for the moment.

The threat from the U.S is not expansionism. It's not realistic really.

The threat is that a far-right leader in the U.S embraces isolationism, withdraws from NATO and basically leaves Europe defenseless, which I think is quite likely.

The strenght of NATO is that is it's 31 countries while Russia is one. :firega:

The weakness of NATO is that it's 31 countries while Russia is one. :nooo:

You cannot expect European countries to continuously fund Ukraine and send weapons for decades, because Ukraine is not their territory. It is what is it, you may hate or like it but it's common sense looking at a window of 20, 30, 50 years - because this is how long the war is going to last. Ultimately all countries in Western and Central Europe have their own issues, and these issues will be prioritized. Almost no proxy wars has been fought indefinitely: the US even disengaged from Iraq and Afghanistan. And, for Russia this is no longer a proxy war as it was in 2014 with DPR and LPR. To Russia this is a war of conquest and a war with their geopolitic nemesis which they are fighting directly. NATO is isn't fighting directly - the fact that Europeans are less likely than Russians to do everything everything in their power to get ahold of Ukraine is neither news, neither a revelation.

Secondly, in case Russia manages to occupy the entire Ukraine, it will have a hard time managing Western Ukraine which is very nationalistic and as a territory it houses a small percentage of ethnic Russians and a larger percentage of ethnic Ukrainians. Thirdly, Poland will inevitably get involved in case of a Russian invasion of the Baltics because Poland will likely not accept to share a border with Russia on the Suwalki Gap, and it will intervene directly in southern Lithuania.

It's not a matter of personal opinion.

A growing share of americans from the left and the right are becoming increasingly opposed to helping countries thousands of miles away. And the next president is likely to be isolationist too.

So if you don't wanna help Ukraine which literally borders you, get comfortable with Russia being on your border and the U.S possibly not helping in a case of a war, that's all I'm saying.

Also for eastern europeans, if you think the French and the Germans will help you, think again :billie:

My best advice: rely on yourselves. Poland got the hint and is doing just that.

I'm pro-NATO, but I can't deny the reality that it's becoming increasingly unlikely that America will continue to be as supportive.

I feel like this is the millionth time I’ve had to say this but this isn’t going to happen. Especially anything that resembles a draft. It just isn’t, I don’t know how else to say it.

Shockingly, countries tend to prioritize themselves and not other nations - it's an odd sociological behavior.

So after posturing militarily, setting up proxies and military bases on all continents and engaging agressively with its geopolitical foes, Uncle Sam goes to get milk and leaves the smaller countriers to fed for themselves. :billie: (I am not disputing your claims though, on the contrary, I agree with you).

That being said, I don't get the sudden idea that Poland will be sheltered from a Russian invasion on other Eastern European countries, especially considering Poland borders the Baltics directly.

You say that now, but my point is anything can change in 20 years. Don’t take European security or democracy for granted and I think a lot of people are in denial. The same goes for the US of course but the difference is that in Europe you have a ton of competing countries in proximity to each other, whereas in the US the threats are internal. It would come in the form of rebellion or coups, not full scale war between fully formed modern militaries.

Tbh they would never actually enact the draft here. The US already has a military that's magnitudes larger and more powerful than just about every other military combined. Why add a bunch of unwilling and rebellious citizens into the fold? :rip:

And I doubt war would ever find its way to our soil. When was the last time a war was actually fought within America that wasn't the civil war? 200 years ago? :laughga:

Truly, the biggest risk we potentially face is a whacked economy. After covid and Putin's invasion, we saw how much we rely on other nations for things and when wars break up supply lines and damage partner economies, we take a hit as well.

And the biggest risk we pose is some Republican loser winning the presidency and pulling us out of every conflict that "needs" us to remain as a looming threat to one side and supporter of the other.

I don't think there's very much risk of an all out NATO/Russia war as long as the US remains committed to NATO.

Where are you seeing this?

The right has been isolationist for ages (unless oil or power is involved) but the left largely supports helping allies fight off invaders

SR_23.12.07_Ukraine-war_1.png

63% of Dems support Ukraine aide vs 33% of Reps, literally almost a 2:1 ratio :lolly:

SR_23.12.07_Ukraine-war_2.png

And here's the changes over time. While calls for expanding our aide to Ukraine have softened generally, the call to stop aiding them or to cut aide is uniquely Republican/right leaning. Democrats and leftists still show steady support for either maintaining what we've been doing or expanding.

Well to be honest, it's more anecdotal.

I don't know if you know Harry Sisson from TikTok and I always watch his lives. I hear guests who are people from the left also complain about aid to other countries and "funding wars" when we don't have healthcare etc...

I mean if the data suggest otherwise, then great. But it's just that I'm seeing more and more people adopt the position that we should focus "on our own problems" first.

I don't agree with it. I think certain foreign problems require our attention, else it'll affect us eventually.
