Russia to 'retaliate' against Romania for allowing F-16s to fly from its territory

The spokeswoman of the Russian MFA, Maria Zakharova, stated that "taking into account the destruction of a significant part of the airfield infrastructure on the territory of Ukraine, there is a high probability that the F-16 tactical combat aircraft transferred to the Ukrainian armed forces by NATO members will fly from air bases in Poland, Slovakia and Romania".  The head of the Russian delegation for military security and arms control in Vienna also stated that Russia firmly warns that "the use of F-16 tactical fighter jets on the territory of the above-mentioned states will be considered by Moscow as the participation of these countries in the conflict in Ukraine and will force Russia to take appropriate measures", says the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bucharest. For real though, if F16s used by Ukraine will take off from Romania, then Romania will indeed become a clearer belligerent party to the conflict. But crucially Russia doesn't have any real windows to retaliate in a meaningful way other than attack NATO. So it will be so awkard to hear the crickets after this, because Russia is too scared to act against NATO and so this scary assertive image that Russia tries to propagate about itself will once again diminish and they will be taken less seriously in the future. Either way, this is a risk taken by Romania that Ukraine can show gratitude for by reversing its 2017 education law that limits the Romanian language in education (but it won't).

NATO will not allow this and Russia knows it. If it does target Romanian airports or whatever then NATO will demolish Russia...Russia is barely holding on...bring in NATO and it will be over for them and they know this. Let's hope it's just posturing to appear powerful and what not...

"and will force Russia to take appropriate measures" means that Russia will increase either arms production and/or intercept the figher jets after they have crossed the border [and are no more on NATO territory]. It does not mean it will counterattack Romania. Zacharow said the same about Finland last year. When she was asked what exactly these measures were supposed to be, she said creating a new St. Petersburg military district [near Finland].

By the way, NYE fireworks were cancelled in Moscow City, and "bombastic" fireworks onto NATO are unlikely to come, so Romanians can expect non-threatening fireworks on 31.12. and hopefully peace will return soon and all can have them

It's from Russian propaganda channel Rybar (with ties with the official Russian Army). They do make great maps of the war and most often factually correct, what they get wrong is the narrative.

This is what I believe. But when nothing happens, Russia will achieve the exact opposite effect, meaning it will prove it's not as powerful as it wants to appear. Which in turn solidifies my take that Zaharova is not a particularly clever person.
