LateToCult 41,944
For the girlies that don’t follow sports, the PAC-12 was one of the most important college football conferences for a century. The latest member schools were: University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) University of Southern California (USC) University of California, Berkeley (Cal) Stanford University of Washington (Washington) Washington State University (Washington State) University of Oregon (Oregon) Oregon State University (Oregon State), University of Arizona (Arizona) Arizona State University (Arizona State), University of Colorado, Boulder (Colorado), University of Utah (Utah) Essentially, due to idiotic financial decisions, the PAC-12 was unable secure the tens of millions for each member school from partnerships with television networks. This money is needed to fund sports programs in these schools. UCLA and USC saw the writing on the wall and made a shocking move to the Big 10 conference back in 2022 for the 2024 season. This scrambled all of the schools in the PAC-12 because those two schools were among the six big schools holding up the conference. Fear set in that Stanford, Cal, Washington, and Oregon could also leave. In July of 2023, Colorado representatives left the PAC-12 Media Days after realizing PAC-12 leadership had no answers to their financial questions. Soon after they announced they would join the Big 12 conference for the 2024 season. In early August of 2023, it was revealed that Washington and Oregon made a pact to leave the PAC-12 together. They joined UCLA and USC in the Big 10. With the news that Washington and Oregon left, the PAC-12 was all but dead. Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah announced they would join Colorado in the Big 12 conference. In September, Stanford and Cal announced they would join the ACC conference. Football is not as big for these schools so that would explain why they took their time leaving. Washington State and Oregon State are the last two remaining schools and it’s being reported that THEY WILL PAY $14M to the Mountain West conference to play them. All other schools received deals worth tens of millions. RIP to the PAC-12. Does anyone know which member on here is going to Oregon State? I know they just recently started attending. Curious what their thoughts are.

They couldn’t negotiate good enough deals with the networks. Then they wanted to ditch traditional television networks for a streaming service. Problem with that is that there wasn’t as much money as the more profitable schools would like. They ran into issues with that. They also turned down a deal with ESPN that would give them 50% of the money ESPN made from covering their games. PAC-12 leadership decided they were too good for that. Foolish mistakes when you have wolves circling you waiting to pounce (Big 10 actively negotiating with USC, UCLA, Washington, and Oregon as soon as they smelled blood).
