Having said that, gay clubs exist in India. As people have mentioned, India has more gay movies and tv shows than even very progressive countries. When compared to almost every Asian country except Thailand and Taiwan, India ranks as more progressive. You can hardly make a comparison with Arab countries at all. Was homosexuality socially acceptable in India in the general population before colonism? I do not know the answer to this actually so im asking But if the answer is no, i dont see how the argumeng holds. If both the West and India were anti gay 100+ years ago, both are independant now, and the West has advanced and they are more behind, u cant blame colonism influence if original india wasnt anymore accepting before than the West was Also modern India has very different religions and cultures to the West. I dont see how it relates. There may be influences that subtly pass down over time but the amount i do not think can be blamed on anything that happened a long time ago Literally 1 generation ppl already think nothing like their parents if a society chooses go change. This kinda varies; some times and places allowed it more than others, likely because Hinduism (and iirc Buddhism) doesn't really say anything abut it explicitly. References to gender and sexual differentiation from the 'norm' are found throughout the literature of ancient India (including the Kama Sutra having a chapter dedicated to gay acts), and some temple complexes, like Khajuraho, have a homoerotic sculpture or two. I'd probably say after the Mughals were in power for a while it started taking a general downturn, and then British colonialism (and earlier than that, Portuguese, in Goa) really sealed the deal.
