‘Israeli officials never have to condemn’: Palestinian ambassador on BBC hypocrisy

Palestine's de-facto Ambassador to the UK Husam Zomlot called out the BBC's unequal treatment of Israeli and Palestinian representatives live on air in the wake of deadly attacks in Gaza and Israel. Zomlot pointed out that he is invited to be interviewed when there are attacks against Israelis, but not to comment on the constant attacks against Palestinians.

Almost 1000 people, mostly civilians, massacred in mere 24 hours. Naked women paraded in the street as people spit on them. 90 year old holocaust survivors taken prisoners. If anyone doesn't have the decency to condemn this, and instead engage in whataboutism to deflect from the tragedy, I'm not sure I can call them a human being, if they don't abide by the basic tenants of human decency.

You can criticize Israel any other day you want, but at least on this day, just on this occasion, show the decency to condemn this instead of deflecting. And if you can't even do that, you're a lost cause.

thank you. there are a select few users here who seem unable to even think about condemning yesterday's events without bringing up a 'but...' right after.

Probably 'cause the only time this conflict is even in the media is when Israel is the victim of an attack.

That's why he's speaking out about it now. He quite literally says he only gets invited to speak after Israel is the victim of an attack.

When it's the other way 'round, sure the people can be loud but the media? 🦗 🦗

And if he wants to encourage people in the West to support the palestinian cause, is this how to do it? You're right about the media not covering the palestinian issue enough, but if I were him I'd use this opportunity to set a good example. At least start with condemning these barbaric attacks. That would help people understand that Hamas actions should not be conflated with the Palestinian people. But sadly, now that people see how Palestinian leaders and sympathizers refuse to condemn these actions, they'll think that there's no differentiation to be made, which ultimately hurts the Palestinian cause.

It's not smart. It's not decent. And it's not useful even for the objective he's seeking. And Palestinian leaders have never been smart politically. They passed on two good deals, 1947 (U.N proposal for the creation of two states: Israel and Palestine, giving Palestine pretty much half of historic Palestine) and in 2000. The 1947 is obviously much better. But even the 2000 one is much better than the status quo. It would've given Palestine 87% of the West Bank. Currently Palestine controls merely 11%.

So this billigerant approach that Palestinians have chosen has honestly benefited Israel much more, as they just keep grabbing more and more land everytime Hamas or Palestinians attack them.

What good will these attacks achieve? Israel will probably grab parts of Gaza. And this kind of behavior from Hamas and Palestine ambassadors will make the world colder to this subject.

How can anyone blame Israel's government for provoking it and even defend the terrorist organization Hamas, when Hamas' position on Israel has always been to wipe all of Israel out, which is an uttermost barbaric goal? They would have acted this way, anyway. Regardless of who rules Israel. Why would they have wanted to stop and act differently if there was another government? They have their horrible goal and won't stop until it is fulfilled.

"Hamas is a Palestinian militant group which rules the Gaza Strip. It is sworn to Israel's destruction and wants to replace it with an Islamic state. Hamas has fought several wars with Israel since it took power in Gaza in 2007.

Hamas as a whole, or in some cases its military wing, is designated a terrorist group by Israel, the United States, the European Union and the UK, as well as other powers. Hamas is backed by Iran, which funds it and provides weapons and training."

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-67039975

They [Hamas] did not wait for Israel's government. If Iran or whatever other country had given them this many weapons before, they would have used it in the past even if Israel had a different government (your government of choice) because Hamas position, is, always has been, and remains, and will be in near future, to wipe out Israel. They attacked many times Israel and this time they had amassed this many weapons. Some of you act as if Hamas had not acted this way if Israels gov. was not the current one and seeks the fault in Israel. Their ultimate goal is unaffacted by who rules Israel unless their goal is fulfilled. If Iran will give them XXXXX weapons in 15 years and Israel will by then have a different government, more moderate, it's not gonna change Hamas goal in any way and they will attack like this again if they are supplied with weapons. they did in the past, less powerful but they did. They could not act like this before at the same scale for the simple reason: lack of weapons.

If anyone is to be blamed other than those who executed these terrible actions described by @Dennis & others, it is the governemnts/organizations who supplied Hamas with weapons (notably Iran), or the organizations donating money that ultimately is alienated and used for weapon purchases.  Casting the blame on Israel is victim blaming in its most extreme version. But somehow I doubt this is Iran alone. Iran is not that rich after this many US sanctions and wouldn't give away so many weapons as it relies on them, too. We have seen during the Ukraine war that countries actually keep weapons for themselves and do not like donating them, and only give away low-quality weapons. Other countries/organization must have interfered here massively. Now we will experience a chain reaction of endless force and use of weapons. If the US will now deliver more weapons to Israel in future, and Iran/other countries will do, too for Hamas, this is developping into a proxy war of USA-Iran/others with Israel/Pal. as the battlefield.

Imagine next month would be re-elections in Israel (very unlikely, just an experiment of thought) and a dramatical political change would occur, and afterwards, one month later, other countries would secretly massively supply Hamas with lots of mega-weapons - do you think Hamas would wait and engage in a peaceful way of solving it? I doubt that.

And almost every single member in this goddamn forum has condemned the violence, stating that an eye for eye is not right. But do you actually expect Palestinians to have to go on and apologize for the actions of Hamas?!

Every. Single. Day. There are atrocities committed against Palestinians by the Israeli government, IDF, and settlers. Every. Single. Day. Look up the videos on social media of women getting their clothes torn off, children getting kicked, spit on, pushed, shot, disemboweled. And it is silence. From you and from most of the media. That is literally why this man spoke up.

And part of the reason why so many of y’all saw this attack by Hamas as a surprise is because much of the public straight up doesn’t give a damn about Palestinian death, murder, rape, disfigurement, disenfranchisement, homelessness, etc. You ignore it, downplay it, and like many were doing in the numerous threads on this forum, straight up justify it in the same way you say others are doing for Israeli victims. Why won’t the BBC interview the same man when Palestinians are set on fire, their houses torn down and their livelihoods taken away because they aren’t the right ethnicity?

Anyways, for anyone curious about how bad the violence is in the region, please see the tweet below. This post (which I shared in the other thread and will share here) highlights the level of violence Palestinians faced just in the last 15 years.

He probably did that the first several times they propped him up as a Palestinian face to disavow an attack on Israel. And it probably got old to hear his own voice be cut short and have half the story told.

Idk that, obviously, but I could imagine that's the case.

Ok, so again, I don't personally feel equipped to debate this but this sounds inhumane :rip:

So, Israel occupies Palestine, yeah? An anti-Israel terrorist group attacks Israel and Israel retaliates by being even more vicious towards Palestinians, displacing and killing hundreds or thousands at a time and withholding food, medicine, electricity, etc from thousands more.

Israel's response to a terrorist attack was to commit an act of terrorism.

But if Palestinians would just be nice to the nation that's being so cruel to them...then peace would be achieved? I mean, all I ever see is that Israel constantly breaks peace agreements and their current PM escalates the conflict with the intention of wiping them off the map.

If that's wrong, by all means. I'd actually love to see a complete list of peace agreements and why they fell through or who broke them after being put in place. I want to learn more about this all.

And I know (or, I'm pretty sure) this isn't what you're saying exactly but this bit of your post reads as "they had it coming because of the way they act".

In American terms, it's giving "well, the cop wouldn't have shot him if he would have just complied", says the person ignoring the cop breaking several civil rights and laws and the cop's obvious escalation and aggression towards the person shot in the back and killed.

Not your intention, I'm sure. I'm familiar enough with your presence here to know you're not a sociopath :spin:

Except that this "terrorist group" is literally the government of Gaza. So that's why I emphasized earlier the need for Palestinians to condemn and if necessary rise up against this group. Because all Hamas is doing is making their lives worse. But when Palestinians show support explicitly or implicitly to Hamas, obviously the rest of the world will be more hesistant to criticize Israel's response.

Usually there's a lot of pressure on Israel to make sure it doesn't react excessively. This time around you hear complete silence. No country, not even the EU which usually can be sympathetic to Palestine, is calling on Israel to show restraint. Why? The pictures coming out of Israel, and the lack of condemntation from Palestinian leaders/people makes it more difficult to be on Palestine's side right now.

This is the harsh geopolitical reality, whether we like it or not. And what makes this situation so egregious, is how blatant and deliberate the targeting of civilians is. We're not talking about Hamas rockets inadvertendly going off course and killing civilians or something. No, we're talking about Hamas knowingly and intentionally going door to door, looking for civilians, women, children, killing/kidnapping them. And when Palestinians struggle with condemning this, they're only hurting their cause.

If I were a Palestinian or Pro-Palestine activist, the first thing I'd do is condemn this. I don't care if Israel condemned in the past or not. Showing good morals doesn't require precedent. It's a battle for the public opinion. Why aim for the bottom rather than take the high road? So yes this Palestinian diplomat's response is unhelpful.

if you were Palestinian, you would have been born into a culture where Israel is non-stop 24/7 demonized, where Hamas is non-stop glorified and portrayed as heroes; you would have been born into a culture where your access and consumption of media would be totally different than you have now; if you were Palestinian ever since you were a child and ever since your birth you would have been socialized in an environment where saying anything good about Israel is making you a social outcast and likely beaten by others. The fact alone that Hamas supporterts might kill you while in Palestine, would have most likely prevented you from saying this. It is highly unlikely that you would condemn this because what you write now, it entirely is from a western perspective and only possible if raised by western values or compatible values (Japanese, Vietnamese, Israel, etc.).

If you were a Palestinian, you must proceed on the assumption to be an average Palestinian. And lots of them, do not condemn it and despise Israel. If you proceed on the assumption to be in Palestine in the same position to form a judgement like you are here right now, this is highly unlikely and an error in philosophical logics.
