I understand what you mean here. There is a feminist idea that the construct of gender is reductionist, that what is masculine or feminine is just stereotypes. That what it means to be a woman is just what society dictates. Feminist theory asserts that women do not need to abide by these stereotypes to still be considered women, and that the social construct of gender is fundamentally flawed. The problem arises when you try and put the theory into practice. Just because you know something is a construct doesn't immediately undo its effects or its importance in society or even to yourself. Individually, we might understand and resist ideas of gender roles and stereotypes, but human society as a whole operates with those ideas in effect. We are raised with these ideas, they're ingrained in us from birth. It's impossible to be unaffected or to undo that learning entirely.

So trans people also have to operate within those boundaries. For example, many trans women do emulate the gendered stereotypes of femininity to signal to others their gender identity. It's not done to garner attention or just because they think that's what it means to be a woman, but it's done to clearly state their gender to decrease confusion and misgendering. 

Nonbinary identities exist for many reasons, including but not limited to dysphoria of binary identities, euphoria of a nonbinary identity, incongruence with binary ideas such as prescribed gender roles and stereotypes, ambivalence or disdain for definitive labels. But they still have to operate in a society that primarily sees gender in a binary. So instead of trying to force themselves into the rigid constructs of male or female, they instead introduce a new concept into the framework, hence the identity of nonbinary. 

So it appears regressive because trans identities are interacting with gender roles and stereotypes, but in reality, they have to because that's as evolved as society is as of now. Individuals are elevated in the understanding of gender, the system is not.

The Middle East has some of the most homophobic laws against lgbt - you’re barbarically killed there for it in places.So a higher proportion from there are going to be naturally more skewed to those beliefs and bring with them when they migrate
