UK Prime Minister says misgendering trans people is ‘common sense’

It’s one thing to accidentally misgender someone, you just correct your mistake and move on.

It’s another to go out of your way to misgender someone because you are an ignoramus who can’t understand social changes. Or if you are a pick me conservative politician who wants easy attention by parroting boring talking points while deflecting REAL problems.

Trans people have gone through enough. I find it so ironic how in the US, the party that cries “mah FrEeDuMm” is so fixated on attacking humans exercising their own freedom.

Isn't sex biological and objective, ie something you can not change? A transwoman will still have the sex male. Isn't gender socially constructed and subjective? Can someone explain to me why what he said is so controversial?

Even sex biology isn't as binary as people would like to think. All the things that we account for biological sex - Chromosomes, Genitals, Gonads, and secondary characteristics - all have variance that can't be neatly divided into a binary. If you try and define biological sex singularly by any of these metrics, it fails. If you try and create a binary with any multiple of these metrics, it fails. The fact that intersex people exist disproves the binary of sex.  The idea of sex categorization is also a construct, just one more rigid when compared to gender so it seems more concrete.

But, more importantly, what he said is a dog whistle, a thinly-veiled one, that signals his belief that trans people are delusional and cross-dressers. "Men are men and women are women" is a statement that is innocuous at its face, but it also doesn't say anything either. "A is A, and B is B". That's because, with the context of "changing sex", now it's implying something transphobic. Put together, now its reading something like "We shouldn't be bullied into believing people can change sex; men are men, and women are women, and you can't change that. You will never be a man/woman. You will only be a cross-dresser." It also reduces gender down to sex, conflating the two, which is just plainly incorrect.

REALITY

People who are constantly flip flopping between genders whenever they feel like it just want special treatment and deserve to be called out. These people give trans a bad rep. If you can’t even take your own gender seriously, don’t expect others to.

This implies that gender is a binary thing. It's not. Gender is a spectrum, like sexuality, so you're inherently going to have people who fall between the spectrum. It's not just male and female and that's it. Genderfluid and genderqueer people are just as valid, and to be frank, I think this is disgusting language.

This doesn't exclude transgender people. Transgender people can fall between the spectrum in and of themselves. Sure, there are people who transition from one gender to another in a very binary fashion (i.e., male to female or female to male), but you can also have transfemme people, for instance. They may not necessarily identify as a woman, but they identify with femininity more than masculinity and present in a more feminine way.

The tories have done nothing but **** up for 13 years and this is their last ditch attempt to appeal to the lowest of the lows. If the UK votes them in again I’ll officially become Scottish.

Not the bore worms!

Care to provide a single example of this?

Well this video below is a clear example of what it is I worry about:

I don't know how prevalent this is exactly but I don't think in any way this is a good way of parenting
