People should leave her alone and she doesn't have to apologize for something that's basically a witch hunt.

I couldn't watch that movie, nor the whole trailer, because I couldn't handle it. But I'm convinced she made that project in good faith.

Someone who made the movie in good faith wouldn’t have depicted and encouraged Autism patient care practices that are known to kill the patients (the restraint method) and have been removed from all medical journals and is in some states on the cards to become prosecutable as involuntary man slaughter as a result.

She refused to remove said depictions when doctors and Autism patients pointed it out all because her primary “research” was aided by a group who thinks vaccines give people Autism and continues to advocate for these outdated, harmful practices.

At every turn people tried to educate her and explain the issues, and for a long time they were much kinder about it than she was in return. She meanwhile was combative and dismissive the whole way, and refused to actually include or listen to anyone who actually lives with or around severe autism.

Is that your definition of doing something in good faith?

inb4 Sia was the one who found it unpleasant and stressful

No wait because I actually read it like that :air: I was like “there’s no way she just said that” :franminervini:

The real issue with Sia’s movie is that it’s simply bad, the character studies were incomplete and even the songs were meh.

Also, she should have communicated better on Twitter instead of reactively lashing out.

Having said all of that, a neurotypical actor should not be stopped from playing a neurodivergent character.

Acting is an exercise in empathy. It’s a form of art where you embody someone else to try to learn what they went through in a life completely different from the actor’s.

If I want to see ‘authentic autism’ on camera, I can watch documentaries about autism.

Like I said, I haven't seen the movie myself, but how does Music encourage the restraint method? I know it's depicted in the movie, but don't know the context. Just on face value though, depicting wrong, dangerous and outdated methods isn't a bad thing. It simply happens and is rooted in reality.

And I very much get why she tried to protect her own work. Especially for someone being on the spectrum herself, it can be very hard to accept another perspective and let go of your own vision.

Sounds more like misguided and ill-jugded to me.

It encourages it because it depicts the use of it as being a positive and helpful to stop someone with Autism from having a meltdown. It shows that method being a harmless solution and a good thing when it’s not.

She worked with Autism Speaks on this film which is a group that peddles false and dangerous information about Autism under the guise of “charity” and “awareness”. They are routinely in violation of the truth be it how to care for those with Autism or theorizing on the cause (hint: they support an age old conspiracy theory about vaccines that has been proven untrue many times).

Showing the method in the film as a good and productive thing and having your movie backed by a group that publicly advocates for it despite the litany of proof that it can lead to death is indeed an endorsement of the message.

She was told that before production, during it, and after it and still decided it was okay to teach that lesson.
