Paint the Town Red” marks the first rap track (defined as songs that have hit or are eligible to appear on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart) to lead the Hot 100 in over a year, when Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl” ruled upon its debut atop the chart dated Aug. 27, 2022. Doja Cat ends a 54-week break between rap No. 1s.

Before the 2022-23 break, the last time the Hot 100 went without a rap champ longer was pre- and post-Y2K: after Will Smith’s “Wild Wild West,” featuring Dru Hill and Kool Moe Dee, reigned for a week in July 1999, rap was absent from the top spot until Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me,” featuring Ricardo “RikRok” Ducent, began a two-week command in February 2001 – ending a drought of 79 weeks, or just over 18 months, and 22 No. 1s without a rap leader.

The song is a bop and itself deserves to be a hit but Doja doesn't deserve success

Other than 3 songs, this is a stellar top 10.

Calm Down, Vampire, Snooze, Dance the Night, Cruel Summer, I Remember Everything, and Paint the Town Red are all great songs.

I’m a simple guy to please, if you like Melodrama, we chill.

To be fair, "Fast Car" is a brilliant song, but the fact that Luke Combs is profiting off of it with this cover is disgusting and tone-deaf.

I know. I've heard so many people throwing shade against Fast Car and I just keep thinking: Do they not know who Tracy Chapman is and how stunningly talented she is? Fast Car is one of my all time favorite songs. Doesn't matter who sings it.

What? People have made covers a million times and made success off them. . Paint the town red is a sample of another song. How is fast car “tone deaf”

It just doesn't feel fair to me that a very, very straight white cis man is making so much money off of one of the most iconic songs ever written and performed by a black woman. I just don't feel like it's his song to cover. My opinion.

I suppose at the end of the day Tracy is making great money off the songs' resurgence, and it's true that the song transcends whomever is singing it. It just personally doesn't sit right with me.

Tracy has made comments about how she was honored to have her song reach the top of the charts in country music and that she is happy for Luke and the new audience that his cover has brought attention to the song all these years later.

Off topic but the way people throw around the whole “straight cis white male” in points drive me crazy, like what would his sexuality for example have to do with this. If Frankie Grande was out there charting with it, would you consider it appropriate. Or like, if Grimes did a cover it would be ok? :ladyhaha:

This isn’t tayordaily or oliviarodrigodaily but we post about them all the time…that’s not the point. I’m telling you to log off b/c you’re saying doja doesn’t deserve success and for what reason? Because you’re at home bored?
