Olivia Rodrigo on fan speculation some lyrics in "vampire" are about Taylor Swift

The antithesis of creativity: the current climate where inspiration can quickly become a copyright issue. Sour was plagued by it: after listeners noted similarities between Rodrigo’s song Deja Vu (an ecstatic skewering of her ex for rehashing their favourite pastimes with his new girlfriend) and Taylor Swift’s Cruel Summer, as well as between her Good 4 U and Paramore’s Misery Business, Rodrigo ended up giving both acts 50% of the credits and royalties for the respective tracks.

Some fans are convinced that Vampire – specifically the yelled “bloodsucker, fame ****er, bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire!” – is about Swift, especially given that signs of their budding friendship vanished after the credits issue.

“How do I answer this?” Rodrigo whispers at the table when I ask her. “I mean, I never want to say who any of my songs are about. I’ve never done that before in my career and probably won’t. I think it’s better to not pigeonhole a song to being about this one thing.” She laughs nervously (she often laughs nervously). “I was very surprised when people thought that.”

It could be about anyone though, a bf, a family member, a manager or friend, even TS! Her ARTPOP could mean anything :neyde:

Imagine taking 50% royalties from a new artist on the block despite being such a mega star :rip:

music rights are music rights. We live in  a society. Otherwise Paramore wouldn't do that too to her.

I still think Taylor is gross for that. They do not sound like copyright infringement comparable tracks. I am a fan of her music. But she is, indeed, the anti-hero, and is overly competitive, fame, and money hungry.

But I also don't think "vampire" has anything to do with her.

Elvis Costello defended her instead of wanting credit...

That's his prerogative.

Olivia shot herself in the foot when she said Deja Vu took some inspiration from Cruel Summer. I feel like she thought she was giving Taylor some props but Taylor went ahead and asked for some writing credits instead. Part of the bridge of both songs are indeed similar. The lyrics 'I scream for whatever it's worth I love you ain't that the worst you've ever heard? and 'you're trading jackets like we used to do yea everything is so reused' have the same melody and deliverence. I think Taylor really wanted Cruel Summer to have it's moment in 2020 before covid happened and when Deja Vu smashed a year later she felt a certain way about it. I'm sure Olivia was shocked because she already used an interpolation of one of Swift's songs on Sour and gave her writing credits. Taylor wasn't gonna let Cruel Summer's iconic bridge be ripped off before it had a chance to become a single. So Taylor took 50% royalties. Gotta love TayTay:ladyhaha:

Wow, I feel sorry for Olivia, now I get why she doesn't mention Taylor anymore :ohno:
