as long as the business doesn't go bust, sure. a few of my blu-rays came with a free digital copy that now no longer exist because the company responsible for it closed. thankfully it was just a freebie that came with the physical edition

That sucks. They can pull movies/TV shows off of streaming whenever they want, for any reason. It already happens.

Well this is where digital preservation has to be kicked into high gear. Physical media is annoying to lose to put it mildly,  but if we as preservationists can do our part to back up and care for what remains then I'd say not all hope is lost. We just need to get the word out and educate folks about how important media preservation is, both physical and digital

This. Physically gatekeeping joy doesn't make people follow legal routes. Look at Prohibition in the 1930s. People just went underground to imbibe. So if a company or authority goes out and tells me a VHS/DVD will no longer be made available physically or digitally to purchase legally, then that's not gonna stop me. I'll either pay a premium to a 3rd party seller on ebay or I'll torrent it through a VPN. Because no one tells me what I can and can't watch

Ehhh I don't know how to feel about this. I haven't bought or watched a physical movie in a very long time, but the idea that all libraries are becoming 100% digital seems... vulnerable? Makes us very dependent on technology and the fickle behavior of the issuers. But was bound to happen I guess, wonder if music will follow soon as well.

Otoh, when you're a collector, after decades this stuff pile up like crazy : vinyls, VHS, CD, DVD, computer games (boxes, mind you!)... Thank god I stopped and went full digital on hard disks 20 years ago. I banished audio MP3 for lossless since about the same time to keep the best quality. 720p replaced divx ten years ago and now 1080p is going to be replaced by 4k...

Anyway, most of these physical copies, unless very rare and collectors are no less than harvesting dust in banana boxes in my attic... Maybe years ahead, after a world wide EMP bomb drop, these things will be of some real value again.

I sometimes wonder in front of all that stuff and hesitate to simply get rid of it once and for all. Must be age related too.

This is sad.. but I understand it. I haven’t bought a DVD in forever. There was something so cool/nerdy about buying DVD’s a decade ago.. I don’t know, the internets really changing everything. Not sure if I like it or not.

This seems really scary, actually.  Soon we won't own anything and studios will be able to fully control the content, editing or removing it from services whenever they feel like it.  Even digitally owned media can still be restricted/edited.

Just yesterday I was thinking how physical games and movies are still a thing. So much plastic waste, while everything is available online...
