This video snippet makes me feel that Gaga wanted Tony to be there if she releases a jazz project on her own.. but that wont happen now.

I feel like maybe theres an unreleased duet between the two, that could be released in her next Jazz record.

King of the Fall

Tony Bennett is irreplacable, he did not pass his torch onto anyone.

Hey, I'm king of the world, you ought to hear my song, you come on measure me, I'm twenty inches long

I think whether or not he "passed the torch" to Gaga is no one's prerogative but Tony's and his family. If his son said that he metaphorically passed the torch to Gaga, then he did. But clearly, Gaga doesn't want that kind of acclaim, which is also her prerogative as well. Whatever the case, the most important thing is the relationship they had together and just how close they were. It's clear that Tony provided great mentorship for Gaga and that she valued and loved him deeply. That's worth more than whether or not people believe Tony symbolically "passed the torch" to her.

They each hold their own torches. It doesn't need to be passed because there are unlimited torches to go around

Something something metaphor about the light it creates when everyone is allowed to hold their own torch instead of passing one around blah blah blah

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

Nooooo no no. She’s wonderful, but she dips her toe into jazz while being a pop star. Tony was a jazz singer/artist. That’s a very different thing. She definitely has helped repopularize the genre but tbh what she performs and sings is mostly out of step with the jazz industry. She doesn’t really move jazz forward so much as honor its tradition. That’s a wonderful thing in itself but a torch holder needs to keep blazing trails for the art not exclusively giving flowers to the runners before them. That’s the difference. I loooove her jazz work. I do. And she’s wonderful, but someone like Amy Winehouse moved the industry. Someone like Cécil McLorin Salvant who, while less mainstream, is at the top of the jazz game rn continuing to push things ahead in new ways. So when Gaga does that then sure, I think she can be a torch holder. And I hope she does!

No. There's no torch to pass; Tony was in a league of his own and so is Gaga. They had beautiful collaborations and she also didn't believe she was getting a "torch" passed down.

I wouldn’t say he did.  Gaga has never released a solo jazz project. The only thing we really ever got was Jazz and Piano in Vegas.  Other than that, I would not compare her jazz career to Tony’s.

Their jazz careers are very similar because Tony introduced The Great American Songbook to a new generation and that’s exactly what Gaga did. The conversation of “original” jazz music has no place here because Tony was famous for reinventing previously existing songs and not writing new ones.

I didn’t say anything about “original” jazz music.  Their jazz careers are different because Gaga’s only came to fruition because of Tony, despite her always having a love for jazz music, she never did it without tony.  Tonys whole career is all jazz.  They’re very different

Pronounced like “Balenciaga” . Emphasis on the “Ga”

I don’t think the whole ‘torch passing’ concept is applicable here. She’s definitely opened Jazz music up to a lot of people who probably would never have become as familiar with it as they are today, but she’s not going to dedicate her career to Jazz music like Tony did.

Hopefully she receives all the love and humbleness that is needed to protect her grieving process. It must be a very difficult time for her now
