They are definitely a super power when it comes to global influence, for better or for worse It's just bizarre to have far right American ideology (or at least group aesthetic? if you wanna call it that) being validated in conservative circles here. Like we have our trashy history, politicians and all, but somehow people think that Trump as an entity will directly impact their life in a Canadian setting. Sans the influence part, I don't know how to put it into words, but it's like the radical right of Canada (and all the old school bigots tbf) are expecting Trumpism to actually become part of Canadian politics. I've frequently heard the 'f trudeau, all I care about is Trump'... but like... what does that mean. It's very much a symptom of a greater issue globally, but it's obtuse. But also to add to this point, hate speech is illegal here from what I remember. Organizations like the KKK, WB church, and the lot are considered terrorists in Canada (right, like I'm not misremembering?), so at what point does a collective of people that enact trumpism (and all of the fringe group ideologies coming from that as well as said history people have already mentioned), become illegal in Canada? I know politically and culturally we are only slightly doing better than America in terms of people's personal politics, but objectively it seems contradictory to our hate speech laws (?) to allow people to participate in groups frequently associated with hate. Perhaps there will be a change in tone with what's going on in the states...

Canada already didn't allow slavery, much of the US still did. A clear divergence in the evolution of society was already being seen since the colonization era and continued to evolve differently with different politics Also a Country can have a lot of guilty history... But as far as the people of today, it's not just the fact that the ppl of today weren't alive then... Its also the fact that most ppl living here today are not even direct descendants of those colonizers (for the ppl that like to blame ancestry)... Most ppl in Canada are 3rd generation immigrants or less meaning their families were not even here until the 20th century even for a lot of white ppl like me (my family first came in the 1970s) It's was a horrible history, but it does not necessarily reflect the people of today and how they think Knowing ur history is important. But history is not an automatic representation of today's culture. By that argument Germans are Nazis and that happened way more recently in history . You’re trying your best to not remember that half of the US is quite liberal, which is why the power pendulum in the US shifts back and forth between liberal and conservative. People like you love to only focus on the racist part of American, when Canada is quite guilty of it and always has been. When I was was there, there was quite a bit of far right mentality- as well as far left. It’s the same in America.

To this day, racism exists, it’s not historical. Amnesty International has condemned Canada repeatedly over the past decade including this year for violations of Indigenous rights such as the ongoing criminalization of indigenous land and water defenses across Canada and violence against indigenous women and girls. Just because Canada allows immigration into stolen land doesn’t mean racism isn’t an issue. Canada relies on immigration for labor and places high importance on a merit based system to obtain educated and skilled labor (mostly from China, India and Pakistan) and has been critiqued by international organizations for racial bias against Africans. They also focus less on family reunification like the US does, and even though Canada mostly only allows a majority of immigrants with at least a bachelors degree non-Canadian born workers face twice the unemployment rate of Canadian born workers. Indigenous schools were alive and well while my parents and grandparents were alive, very recent. Trying to downplay Canada’s very inherent racism by scapegoating a comparison to the US is pointless and only ignores the very real and present, not historical, racism in Canada. Oh no I totally agree that's it's sick to downplay the issue. But as I recall, the comment in question was very specifically talking about Canadians who compare to the US and suggesting it's like the same. I don't think it is. YourEvilTwin 1,384
Poll after poll is showing the Cons in majority territory now. Four most recent polls: Leger: CPC +9 Abacus: CPC + 10 Nanos: CPC +7 Mainstreet: CPC +7 Yes PM PeePee is not a joke anymore. If this doesn't wake the Libs the **** up they deserve to get obliterated.
