When your closest neighbour and ally is slipping head first into Christo-fascism it's hard to keep some of that from bleeding over. Canadians love to pat ourselves on the back about being better than Americans but far right politics are on the rise here too and the complacency is real

Racism exists in Canada, plain and simple. It’s the same false sense of superiority that a lot of folks from the UK have, acting like Great Britain wasn’t largely responsible for the African slave trade, colonialism, and the global proliferation of white supremacy. The judgement that they pass on the extent of the rise of the far right in the US is really more a consequence of moral luck than it is a consequence of moral superiority. But at present I don't think I'd put our issues of racial tolerance & xenophobia on the same level as the US despite the problematic bunch that always exist mixed in

This is all true but there's also a difference between a countries history vs the present. If ur talking about politics I'm not gonna think of Germany as a Nazi people exterminator based on what ppl that are now dead did when the vast majority of Germans do not share those thoughts I think a country can "act morally superior" if they presently act superior to another nation in relative terms, regardless of what their past may have been Not that I think the UK is superior to the US necessarily, but I'm just saying the present should determine that not the past

I'm not sure why Canada having the same history as the US automatically has to mean that in the present day both have to be one the exact same level in terms of white supremacy We are hardly perfect but when we see the racism in America, I don't see how it's not clear the problem is a little worse down there, especially in red states As far back as the 1800s... Canada already didn't allow slavery, much of the US still did. A clear divergence in the evolution of society was already being seen since the colonization era and continued to evolve differently with different politics Also a Country can have a lot of guilty history... But as far as the people of today, it's not just the fact that the ppl of today weren't alive then... Its also the fact that most ppl living here today are not even direct descendants of those colonizers (for the ppl that like to blame ancestry)... Most ppl in Canada are 3rd generation immigrants or less meaning their families were not even here until the 20th century even for a lot of white ppl like me (my family first came in the 1970s) It's was a horrible history, but it does not necessarily reflect the people of today and how they think Knowing ur history is important. But history is not an automatic representation of today's culture. By that argument Germans are Nazis and that happened way more recently in history
