Babylon the Great?

As a fan of Gaga I love the religisosity of the Born This Way album which got me thinking of its biblical references. Ive been listening to it a lot recently and also been studying religious books at a bookstore near my place of work.

In the book of revelations according to the Bible, Babylon is a woman mounted on top of a "wild beast with seven heads". She is a a "prostitute" who "sleeps with the kings of the world" and has dealing with merchants/ business men. This is apparent in the lyrics to GH where she describes the relationship as a total deal and plays submissive even though through that she gains control. Its almost a toxic relationship and gets wild towards the end of the song. It is indeed toxic because according to the Bible the "beast" who she is mounted on eventually  attacks Babylon and kills her, eating her flesh and setting her on fire. The "beast" represents political powers and in the song the GH is sleeping with a powerful man in government. The song then suegues  into "Judas ", a song about a toxic relationship.

What do you think? The popular idea is that its about Marilyn Monroe and JFK but we know Gaga was raised Catholic and she is knowledgable about Biblical matters (Judas, BM, BJAF, GH, EC) and was clearly influenced by it. Discuss!

Interesting theory! Given that Gaga has also visually referenced the Fritz Lang film Metropolis (which has a lot of explicit references to the ***** of Babylon) and also weaponizes her sexuality to advance her cause in the storyline of the BTWB, this reading definitely has some merit.

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be Marilyn Monroe's reported affair with JFK

No Gaga song is ever about "only one thing" you guys.

Yikes not the replies that don't have any understanding of Gaga's music :traumatica:

I have to agree with you that she definitely has double, triple etc. meanings for her music. Interesting theory :artdoll2:

The melody that you choose can rescue you ♥

I remember her saying Government Hooker was a statement about willing to do everything for her message to be heard or something like that, while referencing Marilyn Monroe and JFK.

The fact that she played with words in Poker Face and gave abstract and historically wrong meanings in some ARTPOP song messed up a lot of expectations among fans, but not everything she writes has to be a religious double meaning or something really really deep.

That's really interesting! I think it can have multiple or overlapping meaning and influences, like others said I think a lot of her songs usually do so I could definitely see this as a possibility
