Prisoner, Sweetest Pie, Cold Heart, Potion, Dance the Night?

when are we ever asking male singers this question?

Pretty sure Charlie Puth and Shawn Mendes have both been talked about in regards to repetitive sound. I'm really tired of this narrative.

She does not have a sizable, dedicated fanbase to just jump sounds like Gaga from ARTPOP to C2C to Joanne. She's just like Rita Ora and Bebe Rexha but more successful and can sell shows (for now). She had to hope and promote harder that a new sound for her would work.

In terms of sticking with the sound, she's not Lana nor Lorde nor Carly nor Billie Eilish that has a fanbase around their respective sounds. Besides, Dua's current sound is not really unique. So I'm worried.

Prisoner is in the FN Moonlight Edition, Sweetest Pie is so different from Future Nostalgia :triggered:, and most songs here are within the FN era and are collabs except Dance The Night. You're all too critical when we don't even know if these singles are indicative of her next album's sound.

Mister G

I wouldn’t call her sound tired or boring—it feels more safe than anything and truly radio/chart friendly. I sincerely doubt her next album will sound anything like Future Nostalgia. Dance The Night is a cute bop, but it’s nowhere near a banger like Levitating or Physical from FN.

true , but that's a different problem. Female performers are much more likely to be questioned in their artistic expression than their male peers #justsayin

This is funny because it’s like the opposite of the other thread where another user was complaining that Gaga “abandoned” her core fans for not making music that sounded like his fave era, and instead going in different musical directions.  But when an artist does stick to her core, popular sound, people also complain.  Artists can’t really win.

I actually like Dua’s sound.

It's difficult to find a good balance, I'd say Madonna and Kylie Minogue are doing that perfectly always doing pop but mixing it with other genres so their discography doesn't become too repetitive

No. idk what people are on but why tf would she tease her new sound on the barbie soundtrack

That would actually be a perfect opportunity to see how people react to her new sound before starting her new era and eventually learn from the GP reaction. The movie has a lot of hype from gays which is also (I assume) Dua's main audience.
Why are you being so extra telling people have to be on something to think she could/should do that

Yes I agree, Madonna and Kylie are both excellent at mixing it up while also staying pop. But I personally have enjoyed Gaga’s journey into jazz. I think Gaga follows her muse and makes excellent music regardless of genre or direction. The only era I didn’t love is Joanne but I respected it.

I find it so interesting how Dua seems to never be credited as a trendsetter for the disco revival in 2019  FN was, of course, not the only album going back to a disco sound at the time, but it was arguably the most successful one. Dua is a great artist and performer, and FN sounds nothing like her previous record so I don't get this narrative of her sound getting "tired". Her career is thriving so clearly she knows what she's doing

Agree. Future Nostalgia was perfection and influenced others. I do think she has a bit of an issue in that she hasn't really figured out a distinct sound like some of her contemporaries (a la Billie). It is harder with dance and electro pop, as pop in general tends to sound more similar.... I know people will bring up the Madonna and Elton influences, but even with them Gaga had a few songs out of the gate that were pretty unique (Bad Romance, Poker Face, etc.).

As far as sounding the same (or changing it up)...everyone is different and some are fickle lol....Some people dislike Gaga for changing it up and for not sounding exactly like TFM, but I can guarantee if she put out pop that sounded exactly like TFM.....the critics (and fans) would drag her for sounding 'dated'. People then dislike Lana for 'sounding the same.' Some people are mad at Bey for doing house and not sounding more a la Lemonade or Self Titled.
