lolitamuse 277
I understand it's for preschoolers, but one thing I've been disliking about Disney more and more and is the commodification of their characters. The Little Mermaid animated series from the 90s, while sometimes wonky with the timeline, was a prequel to the movie and showed us more about undersea life. It told us Ariel's story, the story of her family & friends, and gave us in depth characters like Gabriella, who was a mermaid of color and deaf! It was a true story in its own right and Jodi Benson got to continue to bring Ariel to life through her voice acting. Ariel got to continue to be herself. This feels like a strange choice to specifically take Halle's version of Ariel and turn her into a caricature for simple preschool episodes. She's basically Dora the Explorer, as in, the function of the character is to serve as an avatar for young children/babies to experience the learning content through her. But, the character of Ariel does not get any actual story to her the way the 90s cartoon gave her. Idk... this feels weird. Like, why not animate Halle's Ariel in her adventures with Eric? It's clear that they set them up to travel and sail the world without thinking about having little Melody quite yet lol. Imagine that Triton gave Ariel an amulet that let her turn from mermaid to human as she needed to, and they used that power to solve mysteries as they sailed or to help them out of problems. It could still be aimed at children, but with an actual narrative style and respecting the character that Halle has built.
AnglerfishbraBENUS 5,539
the ‘i just wish she had red hair’ crowd is about to find out that they actually ARE racist when they can’t find another reason to bash this cute cartoon
Cameltoe Chariot 14,281
It's weird how Ariel doesn't match the new adaptation's aesthetic outside of her skin colour, and then Flounder is straight out of the original animation And this isn't me being anti-black or anything, I'm just saying I don't get the direction with this. It feels disconnected and weirdly uncoordinated for something like Disney

I’m happy as it’s something for kids to love and enjoy however I really hope they do something else with Halle. A proper sequel either in the form of a show or movie. Let this be a standalone
