India To Overtake China As The Most Populous Country In The World This Year

India is poised to overtake China as the world's most populous nation, with almost 3 million more people than its neighbour by the middle of this year, data released on Wednesday by the United Nations showed.

India's population by mid-year is estimated at 1.4286 billion, against 1.4257 billion for China - 2.9 million fewer - in the United Nations Population Fund's (UNFPA) "State of World Population Report" for this year.

The United States is a distant third, with an estimated population of 340 million as of the end of June, the data showed in a report that reflects information available until February.

Population experts using previous data from the UN have projected India's population would surpass China's this month, but the global body's latest report did not specify a date.

UN population officials have said it was not possible to pinpoint a date because of uncertainty about the data from India and China, as India's last census was held in 2011 and the next, due in 2021, was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nepal is not in India. It’s a separate country.

considering that China and India always were the two most populous countries in world history, they now change their positions and it is normal and okay.

However, India seems not to offer good enough opprtunities for their youth, lots of people are unemployed, the cities have very high densities and India is only 1/3 in geographic size of China. The problem is rather that Indias already masssive popolation will not cease to grow in the forseeable future, it is going to rise from 1,4 to 1,8 billion people. China is managing this better, most of the young people have a future ahead of them without the need of migration.

A lot of countries are having the opposite problem where their population is older and people aren’t having as many kids.

This is a really xenophobic comment because those people aren’t just randomly walking on the roads lmao. India is literally one of the biggest luxury tourism destinations.

But that's exactly what's happening tho... In most of the developed world birth rates are far below the replacement level and even in India it's been falling consistently and it's not about to cross a line where birth rates are about to fall below the 2 child per woman required to keep population flat long term. World population is supposed to peak within the next 20-30 years tops. Africa is now the only continent that has a high birth rate and frankly, their contribution to the world's environmental problems are pretty small comparatively speaking 

 

Ppl forget human life spans are about 80 years. There's a long delay when birth rates drop below replacement levels until u Actually see a decline but ppl are having less babies. We just don't see the effects of lower birth rates right away cuz of the delay

 

Also the overpopulation argument is debatable. The top 10% to 20% of population are the majority of consumption and the most populated countries are not really the main culprits. If everyone consumed as much as a typical Indian the world environment wouldn't be half as bad as it is now. We also produce so much unnecessary waste the way capitalism promotes it's unnecessary over packaging and the cheap poor quality items to replace with a new one on a  frequent basis. Our grandparents didn't have to replace appliances or furniture or clothing as often as we seem to have to tbh

 

I think the effects of "overpopulation" is more a testament to how we use resources than the number of humans themselves. We could cut the population in half and still have these issues. Meanwhile if we were more responsible I don't think 8 billion people would be as much of a issue as it is now
