I meant the reading was, I didn't mean to label you as a person in any way. Sorry it came off that way. (Hard to find the right tone with all this) 7 hours ago, Hold My Ham said: all I'm getting from you is that you don't have a firm grasp on bodily autonomy of children and they somehow deserve to be intimately violated just because you consider it normal. And I feel once again this response as with many others is jumping to the least generous interpretation of everything I'm saying and that's what I have a problem with. I already agree that what he did was not right or appropriate but it's also not p***philia or jailable offence, those terms actually mean specific things, and the lack of nuance is frustrating there. 5 hours ago, SamanthaC said: I'm all for cultures being able to do what is tradition. But child abuse, child sexual assault, etc is still wrong, I do not care what is "tradition." There are many cultures where it's normal for girls to get married at 12 or just slightly older, that's still child abuse and pedophilia. There are some cultures where it's okay to mutilate a female's genitals, which is still wrong. I don't care if you look at it from a western culture perspective or another culture. Abuse and assault is still abuse and assault. Traditions need to be changed in these cases. The traditions are changing and we work everyday to change them without eroding everything, by God it's hard and it breaks my spirit to think some of this may never change but we always try. Please don't imply that I'm justifying them at all. I just don't think it's honest or reasonable to fully demonize every weird and unsavoury act in this way, forgetting all nuances. Infah was nowhere near child marriage or FGM which are some pretty extreme examples btw, and in fact, the Dalai Lama did not put his tongue in the boy's mouth so it wasn't even that. The rush to demonize him, and labeling him with inhumane criminality over this specific incident is so bizarre and rushed to me, that I can't help but find it indulgent especially since it's so many westerners I see that call for his imprisonment. Is there absolutely no room for these considerations anymore? Not sarcasm at all at any point btw.
