When people use that argument against her, they fail to understand that her costumes ARE a part of her art. She's not wearing stuff just to be electic and quirky, she's doing it purposefully and because it truly means something. So when people say "Gaga needs to be less crazy; she should just sing without being so melodramatic", they don't understand that all the costumes, weird make-up, and eccentric performances are an equally valid form of art. 

When Gaga talks about not needing to be in costumes 24/7, I feel like that's more of a practical thing. Like, she realizes that she can be an artist who creates crazy stuff, but not necessarily present that all the time. Whether she's in some archival Alexander McQueen or a black t-shirt and jeans, she's still the same artist. The art and the artist are often treated the same, but they're entirely different. Your creations shouldn't necessarily define who you are as a person. It's an extension of who you are and it's an expression of whatever emotions you're feeling at the time, but I think Gaga's finally in a headspace where she can learn to live a healthy life (both mentally and physically) while also create deeply emotional art.

In fact, I'm pretty sure she talked about it during the Gucci press tour. I don't recall which interview specifically, but I remember her saying that she doesn't feel the need to personally put herself through any sort of pain in order to create painful art (or something to that effect). I also think she's probably putting that practice into Joker.

I get OP's frustration. It's just dumb that people can't appreciate someone's talent unless they dress themselves down. I can get genres not being someone's cup of tea, but she got all of those awards in 2008 -2011 for a reason. Sucks that even some members on this site seem to feel that way as well.

Anyways, I have a sneaking suspicion that the HMH performance was a teaser for her character in Joker more than anything else. Not necessarily calculated, but a happy coincidence to accommodate a last minute decision. I feel like people expecting a 1:1 recreation of Paul Dini's Harley Quinn or Margot Robbie's portrayal may be very disappointed. But this is all off topic so I'll stop now

People are waaaaaaay more narrow minded than we tend to think…. Most people can’t see that costumes and makeup are still a part of someone’s identity, not something that masks it.

Unfortunately, for us to get true justice, we may have to kill them.  Hopefully they change in time, but I'm afraid we're going to have no choice but to dig a big hole and push them into it.

There’s a reason why Gaga became a superstar, and it wasn’t because of stripped back performances, or a minimal look.

Eh bear in mind she wasn’t performing at the Oscars and **** early on. Her performances centered theatrics not vocals earlier on. If you’re not a stan I could see someone not knowing she’s THAT talented. She had a decent voice and HUGE theatrics that definitely overshadowed the voice at times. If you only saw a passing performance here or there on a talk show where she wasn’t really singing STELLAR every single time, sure, overlooking the talent makes sense

Disagree. Plenty of acoustic/vocal centric performances that were widely available from early on where she sung very well and clearly demonstrated her ability.

Exactly. Ppl mostly like generic looks. As soon as you dress with costume or makeup, you're percieved as excentric, weird and usually ppl don't go any further in their judgment.

Its normal. We are talking about people tuning in for a 1 min of a 3 min vmas performance once a year and highly processed vocals on record, with lyrics that seem maybe stupid at first glance. 
If you don’t pay attention you just see the bizzare and over the top garments, movements, lyrics etc. it was a lot to process

Yes widely available to the millennial and Gen z age bracket but the ones who ogled at ASIB were the ones who didn’t even know how to use an iPad let alone look up an old lady Gaga performance on Ellen degeneres from 2010 lmao that’s what I’m saying. If you only casually saw her during awards shows or in passing or heard her on the radio, you could easily think she’s talentless (or at least WAY less talented than she is now known for; remember her music was relegated to “simple pop”). I think we assume that just bc something is accessible that means everyone is on the same level of habit and accessibility. We had two WILDLY different gagas in our heads and he literally called me on the phone to say he saw ASIB and was blown away.
