Romania reacts to Ukraine economically exploiting Danube canal, damaging UNESCO site

Bystroye Canal is not to be used for transport, but Ukraine aims to make it a navigable canal. There are signals that, at this moment, Ukraine conducts dredging works on the canal. If enlarged, the Bystroye canal endangers the Danube Delta’s whole ecosystem. Danube Delta is home to more than 320 species of birds and mammals and is the largest wetland bioreserve in Europe.

Chances are that Romanian diplomacy does very little for fear they might upset the allied forces supporting Ukraine and although Romania might be the fourth largest provider of military equipment behind the Unites States and Poland, Romania and Ukraine are in a dormant conflict over the rights of the Romanian minorities living in Ukraine.

A former Romanian territory confiscated by the Soviet Union, Northern Bukovina and Hertza Region is home to a Romanian minority whose rights are systematically violated. The diplomatic protest of the Romanian authorities against the minority law in Ukraine had no success, and Zelensky is more concerned about the course of the conflict than about the Romanian minority in Ukraine.

As a result: Zelensky started losing its popularity in Romania, even though Romanians still support Ukraine in its conflict with the Russian Army. The Romanian minority rights in Ukraine, the Bystroye Canal dredging, the attempts of the Ukrainian officials to involve Romania in the war and all these latent conflicts erode the trust of the Romanian people in the good intentions of the Ukrainians when relating to Romania.

Thank you! :bradley: This feels so sadenning to me because I know Romania has its hands tied. Ukraine is in war and naturally everybody wants to be on its side, and will be even at the expense of Romania's legitimate grievences. Which will be labelled as Russian propagada, just wait!

Oh no, another day another anti-Ukraine slander from this guy. I'm looking forward to whatever new grievances you're going to exaggerate in the next few days to slander a country whose very survival is at stake.

This is a country at war, with hostile fleets on its shore. If they did work on the canal, i'm sure they have valid reasons. Sorry apparently this is controversial these days, but I think Ukrainian lives and their ability to get food seaborn > species. But to anti-Ukraine folks it seems Ukrainian lives don't matter anymore. Everything else is more important.

I though America was all about international law and whatnot, are US allies excepted from this? Way to alienate your other allies that can clearly to see through all of this. :lmao:

Ukraine slander this Ukraine slander that you know what? If Zelensky didn't lie that a  missile crossed into Romania, that Poland was hit by Russia, if UA didn't act against international treaties surrounding the Danube I wouldn't be able to post this. But they did so who's fault is this?

And the hypocrisy of adding Odessa to UNESCO's endengered list while Ukraine was doing this. :rip:

Or maybe we can be considerate and remember the context we're in? It's not that Ukraine is beyond criticism, but I feel like if your friend is fighting for their life in ER, it's not the right time to air grievances that aren't so urgent and grave you know, it can wait.

Please. :lmao: Romania did everything Ukraine asked. All its stockpilles of ammunition, arms, money, housed Ukrainians for free, allowed and still allows NATO convoys through the country unlike Hungary and this is what it gets in return

Ukraine is no longer fighting to survive (the Kyiv thing is done) but for Zaporozhizhia, Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea. The war is not over because Ukraine wants these regions.

And UA fights for them with Romania's armament. As you can see UA doesn't have the decency of respecting its conventions with Romania, let alone to return the favour. This was all power games from the getgo.

Get yourself out of the propaganda bubble where countries are fighting from the greater good and "democracry" as this is not the case.

Thanks for exposing your agenda as usual. The way you said this makes it clear to everyone. But not gonna waste two days in a row arguing over this. Have a good day

Yes, true, everybody has an agenda exceot you. You don't have any interests and biases and are just a pure observer seeking justice and generosity.

Also you have no factual comebacks as usual and you "leave the conversation". Typical when facts are adverse to your narrative. :billie:

UA can no NOTHING wrong to people like you.

UA wants to capitalize on its situation and become a fluvial hub in spite of international treaties and conventions with Romania, this is not about food. :rip: What food are you even talking about? There are already navigabile canals and a whole coastline which Ukraine could use if it's such a dire circumstances. But again this is not about that.

I personally don't think you're trying to spread Russian propaganda. But it can be read this way, especially with the other thread.

You do have a legitimate point, Ukraine has a lot of issues that separate them from most European countries and are being opportunistic with events like you one you mentioned while they can. Though I think the priority is getting the Ukraine state and its people to survive first, which I feel is very valid.

I'm wondering though if Ukraine wins the war and becomes more westernized, it might change how it treats the environment and ethnic minorities, especially if it joins the EU.

In theory, if Romania helps Ukraine win the war (which it has), this issue might gradually resolve itself by virtue of Ukraine aligning with the EU. It's not an immediate fix but it's definitely a good start.

Game changer. I’m fully on board with Russia annexing Ukraine now.

Countries like Ukraine, Poland, and Romania aren’t real anyway. Just propaganda states installed by the west to undermine mother Russia.

Well yeah, that's the issue. If it was a one-time off, no one would've complained but the issue is, this user seems to be on a mission to constantly find little things they can criticize Ukraine for, almost on a daily basis. Yesterday was corruption (despite most eastern countries having the same problem), today it's the canal, tomorrow god knows what. It starts to build a certain picture. And they've been doing it for months. They're not pro-Putin but they have an obsession with smearing Ukraine, much like the far left and the far right in western countries.

Because these are concerns which do not get adressed. You literally belittle every single point that can be said against the established narrative because in your mind you already decided Ukraine is in the right and always does the right decisions.

Do you seriously think the canal issue will get resolved? By who? It was already decided that Ukraine's desires supercede Romania's.

Zelensky and the Ukrainian government lie for their interests. I would have less issue if the radical UA supporters would stept outside the propaganda and would acknowledge this, but you don't. You belittle every single idea that shows the cracks and that Ukraine manipulates things for its own gains.
