It's very difficult for me to wrap my head around the idea of a human not being either a man or a woman. I completely understand transitioning and identifying as a man or a woman but they? I struggle with that. I totally get the gender stuff. That's all made up bullsh*t but the biological aspect trips me up every time. I need to do tons of reading on this topic because it really is difficult to understand. I support these people 100% but still trying to comprehend it. It's not terribly difficult to understand honestly. The gender binary exists as a social norm, like a reference point, and people's pronouns are used to express the context of their identities against that binary/norm. Most people are on the same side they were born into (meaning their gender reflects their sex and they use the pronouns they were given like he/him or she/her). Some people are biologically on the wrong end of that spectrum and may decide to transition to the "opposite" sex so their body better reflects their identity. They often use the other pronouns than the ones they were given at birth. Same as above. Others fall somewhere in the middle or may float around the spectrum. Their gender identity is fluid so using either masculine or feminine pronouns doesn't accurately express their identity. Most of these people will use they/them as gender neutral pronouns. But really, you don't have to understand anything other than "call people what they want to be called". If someone says they want to go by they/them and you agree to use those pronouns to address them, then you're fine. 🌸Flourishing and vibrant🌼

Leblanc 2,454
My only issue with they/them pronouns is its centered around the English Language, and I've encountered quite a few people whose first language isn't English and to them in their language they/them doesn't work as an individual identifier but rather to refer to groups only so it's difficult for them to switch. I fear it's a little bit like the conversation about cultural appropriation or Latinx where it feels like the decision is being made in one place without regard for the world at large and how complex it is and how different cultures view things completely differently Coven Season

It's really not that complicated. English has been using "they/them" to refer to singular people for decades, probably longer. "A person posted on GGD" "Oh? What did they post?" Completely natural use of the they/them pronoun. It's not a stretch at all to apply that pronoun to singular people who ask for it. Hell, English is kind of fluid with plural/singular nouns and pronouns. In the first sentence of this post, I said "singular people". And even if none of this were true, language evolves with the times regardless. 1 hour ago, Leblanc said: I fear it's a little bit like the conversation about cultural appropriation or Latinx where it feels like the decision is being made in one place without regard for the world at large and how complex it is and how different cultures view things completely differently Also, I'm not sure I understand this? It's cultural appropriation to respect the chosen pronouns of genderqueer people? We don't consider the comfort of others when it comes to the respect people deserve. If someone using "they/them" makes a non-English speaker uncomfortable then the latter is the one with a problem and they're the one that's just gonna have to get over it. 🌸Flourishing and vibrant🌼
