First-ever Grammy Songwriter of the Year sells catalog

Hipgnosis Song Management has acquired a song catalogue from the first-ever Grammy Songwriter of the Year, Tobias Jesso Jr., known for his work with Adele, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Pink, Sia, Shawn Mendes, Charlie Pugh, Meghan Trainor, Florence + The Machine and others.

According to the announcement, Hipgnosis has acquired 100% of Jesso’s interest in publishing copyrights (including the writer’s share of performance) for “around” 40 songs released between 2015 and 2020.  Further terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hipgnosis CEO and founder Merck Mercuriadis said: “Tobias is amongst the most important songwriters in contemporary music today as demonstrated by his winning the 2023 Grammy Award for Songwriter Of The Year, in its inaugural year."

The music industry is suffering from a big problem: All of an artist's typical revenue streams are becoming nonviable one by one. First record sales were replaced with streaming services, cutting off artist revenue from sales. So touring became the big moneymaker. Then touring became impossible to affordably fund after COVID, cutting off yet another potential source of revenue. Some musicians are cashing in now because I'd imagine they don't see a clear way to make money on their publishing rights in the future. It seems like a short-sighted kinda choice to me though, Miss Taylor Swift is a good example of someone playing the long game with their publishing rights

Tons of stars. Rolling Stone did an article on it a few years ago. Everyone from Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake to classic rock dudes like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Neil Young and Leonard Cohen

Jack Antonoff and RedOne are both on the list. Interesting that producers seem to be frequently taking this deal-- maybe they don't see a future ability to make money on the songs they produced so they'd rather take the cash now
