Believe was written in 1991, 7 years before the official release.

You can notice some similarities but also MANY changes in the lyrics, but the iconic lyrics "Do you believe in life after love?" remained untouched.

Wow sections of this are really trance-oriented.  Very progressive for 1991.  Parts of it could be on Ray of Light (album)

ROL was originally very different too, I get a bit of pop-rock from it

Well, it's a cover song, with a new title. That also have folkish rock sounds to it.

 

So it is a good thing she went with the version we had now cos this version make the song hers.

It’s so cool what this song become.  The demo isn’t that impressive to me but the released version is so powerful and an anthem.

do we know exactly what Madonnas contribution to the song is? She’s credited as a writer and producer, but it could likely be a case of Come To Mama by father John misty?

She changed a few lyrics and the whole "cosmic" sound effects were her ideas, she turned into a dance track.

Also the album version is the short version of the song, the original is 15 minutes long, a 7 minutes cut was leaked many years ago

I had another cut where her screams at the end where much longer and much more haunting, like she's  "mourning", I think it was a 6 minutes one, but I lost it when that hard drive died.
