Singer claims Black Eyed Peas never paid her for singing Fergie’s parts

In a TikTok video, singer Anjulie claimed that she sang all the background vocals on 2010 Black Eyed Peas track "The Time" and lead vocals on "XOXOXO" and was never paid for her work.

She said that will.i.am told her the vocals were going to be guide vocals for Fergie to "recreate," but when she never did them, they kept Anjulie's vocals with no credit or payment. 

One commenter asked if the singer ever considered taking legal action over the songs, to which she replied and said she did.

"I tried. I got in touch with will.i.am's lawyer. I had a bunch of e-mail exchanges with him, and then he told me it was out of his hands," she revealed.

She continued, "I talked to some other guy, he said that he didn't know what to do and eventually just stopped returning my e-mails. I spoke to a lawyer about how to take some legal action and that was way too expensive."

"So, welcome to the music industry," she concluded.

This is actually not the first time something like this happened with Will.I.Am. There were conspiracy theories that under Will.I.Am's production, the backup singer did more than being a backup singer. For example, Britney Spears' Scream & Shout and Britney Jean.

First of all, I will say this. Anjulie is a Canadian icon! Love her music. And she should've been paid for these vocals. However, unless she had it in a contract, she essentially just gave them to Will.i.Am to use as he pleased. I think this might be more of a failure of her management or legal team at the time.

Also, she is specifically referencing a highly filtered / autotuned vocal on XOXOXO that is quite literally mixed in with Will.i.Am's vocal for half of the chorus (I literally thought it might be an AI singing). XOXOXO was not a hit, it was largely panned by critics and considered part of their flop era that led to Fergie leaving the group.

The other vocal she is talking about is background on The Time, which was a hit and is probably more significant. That being said, the actually monetary returns on these contributions, had she been credited and received royalties, would probably be very insignificant. 

She has a right to be annoyed for sure -- I just don't know if this is worth making a big deal about on TikTok... it makes her out to seem bitter & washed... she has a lot of her own incredible music including her last EP which was amazing. Hopefully going forward she can draw attention towards those things.

But how can you be in the studio and not be paid, layered vocals or not doesnt matter.

a Back vocalist Is paid by the hour a fixed amount and then the royalties i think. There are surely signatures of her Passing security and probably her name in the original track. She was there she need to be paid. Little or not.

I remember him sampling an entire song without permission. 
 

The song “Rebound” by Arty and Mat Zo was used without permission for “Let’s Go (featuring Chris Brown) in 2013. Will.i.am contacted Arty for a collaboration, Arty said yes, William said he didn’t want to use the exact same beat so he remade the beat but it wasn’t cleared. William didn’t even know Mat Zo was a composer as well but released the some either way without completely clearing it. Either way he used a really good song and butchered it into his mediocre garbage.
