Ok? And what about descendants from those colonizers who didn’t inherit any generational wealth because their ancestors squandered it away? You can’t expect them to pay too, when they didn’t benefit directly, and that money ran out long before they were born.

okay but like that doesnt happen?? we're talking about such vast amounts of wealth that its near impossible to squander.

sure, you have a some powerful families that can trace their roots directly back to colonization and the slave trade, but you cannot try to blame every citizen of a country today for something they very well may not have had anything to do with and may have even descended from victims of said colonization. That’s the inherent difficulty with painting citizens of a country with a broad “colonizer” brush. America is built on immigrants.

im not blaming every citizen but if you are still benefitting from stolen wealth its really simple: that wealth needs to be paid back. that wasnt your grandparents wealth and it is not your wealth. if you are benefitting from crimes your ancestors committed then thats not okay.

My mom’s side of the family trace their ancestry back to indentured servants. Lol you can’t try to tell me they benefitted from colonization in a way that they now owe a check.

i didnt say or imply that

isnt that the point?

If we can get those countries to do it, i'm on board. And most importantly they need to promise to not do it again. But no chance of it happening, I mean Russia is trying to reconquer Ukraine as we speak and China is trying to reconolonize Taiwan, a colony which it had lost in 1895. And you'll find some people here who are big on asking France to apologize to Algeria but at the same time they'll tell you all about how Taiwan is part of China.

So yes apologizing for past colonization would be a nice gesture, but I wish we can focus on how we can prevent history from repeating itself again. Condemning history is easy and uncontroversial. Doing something about the present is harder. And that's why you see most  nations of this world conveniently ignore all the atrocities that are happening in our lifetime. I wish we can make an impact and save living lives instead of always talking about the past. We love to talk about history but we never learn from it.

Yet, the people of Northern Ireland are mostly keen staying part of the UK and I recognise this as someone who hates the UK and would love a breakup of it. How is it “illegal” when the officially country name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and recognised throughout the world and the UN.

its illegal... because britain invaded ireland and illegally stole land... which they still occupy illegally.

whether or not most people in northern ireland are okay with it now isnt actually relevant. it doesnt change what happened. keep in mind that 42% of northern irish people consider themselves british while 32% consider themselves irish so of course the majority wants to be a part of britain if there are less irish people there (due to the colonization and illegal eviction of people from their homes and counties btw)

you cant colonize and steal land in a legal way use your critical thinking skills cmon now :air:

I can’t even fathom there are people here who whitewash colonialism and deny the responsibility it brings for their successive states. It is sad, and if I can be honest without being disrespectful, it is actually disgusting.

this. there is two options: these people are trolls doing really bad jokes or are a bunch of incels that should be on 4chan, where they would find people like them. discussing with them is waste of time and their opinions as much waste as well

You were being asked whether or not the point was that colonial countries should apologize for their mistakes.

No need for paragraphs when the answer is a clear yes.

words from a president that inherited a past he had no choice in the matter

he as an individual is not to blame, but hes a chief of state, he represents an institution. this apology would be from the institution to the algerians, that's the point

I dont know if youre plain stupid or just pretends to be

Yes from my first post in this thread, I said let's get all countries to do it. But not single out France.

Since you like clear answers and we're on the topic of colonization. You also believe that in current day and age China has no right to recolonize Taiwan right? :oprah:

Don't want to put words in your mouth but in other threads you seemed to insinuate something else, so let's hear it.

I dont see these people here, and even if there is crazy people, what France has to do with it? France still needs to acknowledge it even if russia or china doesnt. Its the mentality of "I wont apology for theft cuz John also steals" that is not clicking to me

No one is saying there shouldnt or that apology is enough. The apology is the formal start of the reparation, why is it so hard to understand?

This we can agree on.

PS.: even tho we disagree in many points, it was not to you that i made the comment of 4chan. it was to some disgusting people in this thread

Yes, China has no rights over Taiwan. I brought up the situation regarding Taiwan, Kosovo and Israel/ Palestine in the past to point you how international law and UN recognition have their limits and are not be and end all arguments when it comes to territorial disputes.

Nobody is asking Italy to apologize for the atrocities of the Roman Empire?

Because the Roman Empire doesn't exist anymore. France does. Britain does.
