Why is no one currently pointing fingers at the Dutch or Spaniards? The Romans? The Turks? The Portuguese? There’s always a focus on the UK and US and now France as if they were the only culprits. Put the spotlight on all of them. Just cause a few aren’t being focused on doesn’t mean we should just ignore/forget the rest. That’s not very sound logic

That’s not very sound logic I mean, it’s not very sound logic to blame people alive today for something their ancestors did. Imagine someone demanding you pay back money your great grandfather stole? Or even someone as recent as your father stole? Yes, it was wrong, but can you change the past? By that logic you could also say gay people have a case for demanding reparations for all the hate crimes they suffered for centuries, as well as the millions that died in the Holocaust. dit 46,738
Not people defending France's colonization of Algeria. France's colonization of Algeria was ESPECIALLY brutal. They literally massacered millions of Algerians. It was more like a genocide. At one point, because they killed so many Algeriens, some of the cities were starting to have French / European plurality / near majority. That's how bad it was yall. It was EXTREMELY brutal and they did not even give Algerians human rights and citzenship or anything. They only offered that towards the end of the brutal colonization. How rude and HOW DARE YOU say it was ok and just how things were. NO. Not all colonies were treated the way Algeria was and Algeria's colonization is still TOO RECENT to act like its some obscure middle ages type of thing. This was very recent. People are still alive from that period and also the consequences of the colonization are still felt to this day.

Uh if my dad stole someone’s car and then gave it to me for my birthday, and the original owner came asking for it back, I’d give it back cause it wasn’t really mine nor my father’s to begin with. I don’t see why marginalized people asking the descendants of their colonizers for reparations is a bad thing? They’re not asking for their stolen land and wealth back. They’re asking for a piece of the pie back.

Algeria is not asking for reperations at this point. It simply wants a formal apology for France's especially cruel colonization of it. France massacered millions. Additionally, the colonization of Algeria ended not too long ago. There are still tons of people alive from that period. It's horrific. The least France can do is acknowledge its atrocities. We ask Turkey to do the same about the genocide of Armenias that happened a century ago. Why do we not do the same for France's HORRIBLE EVIL actions to Algerians that ended only a few decades ago (It ended in 1962).... or do Algerian lives not matter as much because they are Muslim and North Africa? Morphine Prince 109,654
Reminder that FRANCE forced Haiti to pay millions for their freedom. Haiti paid REPARATIONS TO FRANCE. France owes BILLIONS to the countries they colonized and benefited from.

Tax everyone alive in Western nations and distribute that to under developed countries? And then how do you determine which countries are under developed because of colonization or other reasons? Yes, sir. In an ideal world, every colonizer country should be paying for their crimes abroad. Western countries are ok with benefiting from their ancestor’s crimes but think it’s crazy those affected demand anything.

And that’s impossible to calculate. There’s absolutely no way of determining how much each person would be owed. I’m all for acknowledging wrong was done, that’s definitely the right thing to do. But we can’t really sit here today when most of these countries have had their independence for decades to centuries and failed to thrive and blame it fully on their former colonizers. We don't have a time machine, the mistakes are ireversibile but this shouldn't give you a pass. And the leader of a country is basically a personified version of the country. Macron is the president in an office that wouldn't look or be the same if France didn't colonize Algeria. He has personal responsibility for it. He should speak on behalf on France as a nation and regime as he is the face and leader if the country. I agree. I'm just saying half the ppl seem to get even more pissed off when a major institution or person does apologize It's like ppl demand an apology but then don't wanna hear it

You can change the future tho, starting by acknowledging what really happened, then teaching the truth in school instead of completely disregarding entire groups of peoples, their history, telling them to move on, and put Algeria under the carpet cause it doesn't look nice for your image
