It’s a tie between PI and SL. Both were not lead single material and both were not promoted by her. I guess PI is the most upbeat song for radio but with SL there were soooo many better options it’s insane how they thought that SL was it. SL has an awful video too so I guess SL in my answer

Diamond Heart deserved so much more

I really think the whole album deserved better.  imagine if they PUSHED and PROMOTED it and we got

Diamond Heart

Million Reasons

Perfect Illusion

John Wayne

A-yo

Joanne

As singles! personally, I'd pick DIC over AYO as a single but it seemed they were really pushing AYO to be big.

Pronounced like “Balenciaga” . Emphasis on the “Ga”

For me it’s def Perfect Illusion. I didn’t like it when I heard it, I hoped it would grow on me,  and it didn’t. Every other lead single I love. Stupid Love is super fun, people!

If I could vote two…stupid love and born this way

yes it was a success, hugely so, but if you take a step back and look at the whole album it’s really not one of the huge standouts nor indicative of the album sound which I think a lead should be. Any song was going to have some level of success but I think she could have opted for something else like edge of glory or honestly even marry the night and killed. I trust Gaga’s instinct for singles for Interscope and really believe had marry been first it would have ate. The song is fine but kinda an obligatory given sort of song imo and yes I was a veteran fan by the time it dropped so this isn’t fresh eyes looking at it. Discuss!

Well this has to be the good sis Perfect Illusion... No matter the quality of the song, it just didn't really make waves and I doubt many people remember it today.

I personally love Stupid Love so I don't get all the slander against the song. I'd personally take it over Just Dance any day :ohwell:

A lead single should be a perfect lead into the album both sonically and lyrically. Perfect Illusion and Stupid Love fail on the sonic aspect

Honestly I say Just Dance only because they’re all so strong and all have a sledgehammer beat, but I think Bad Romance’s whole soundscape, BTW’s power and energy, Applause’s catchiness and energy, PI’s vocals and key change, and SL’s pre-chorus and immediate catchiness of the high pitched vocal sample all triumph the highest highs of just dance

Personally I think Perfect Illusion could have been soooo much better as the lead single with much better visuals for Joanne as a whole and a completely different video. Also, the way she pronounces “love” in the song makes me never want to listen to it. It’s just this weird thing since Joanne that she pronounces certain words or phrases in a way that is not pleasant to me at times.

Stupid Love, however, not only didn’t belong as a single but shouldn’t have even made it on the album. It’s just the most basic of basic songs with that production. The entire album for me is a let down given the production but I think that’s because of Bloodpop’s involvement. I’ve seriously only ever liked maybe three songs he has had a hand in producing. I think the production of HMB is one reason it didn’t have mass appeal and chart like it could have.

I agree with this in retrospect. But I also don't really like Just Dance as a song. It aged very poorly for me over the years.

This I also think that in combination with it being played so often have lowkey made it unlistenable to me when I’m alone. If I’m like partying or obviously seeing it live it’s a different story though!

I think I haven’t listened to Perfect Illusion in over two years and just listened to it and it was actually better than I remembered :lolly:

But still my least favorite lead single :selena:
