I'm fascinated by the fact that fans think that their opinion of the performance is somehow more valid than the son's opinion

Somebody had to say it.

edit: despite anyone explicitly saying it, I felt as though some comments implied Gaga's connection to Bowie was more strong than his own sons.

Pronounced like “Balenciaga” . Emphasis on the “Ga”

Somebody had to say it.  they're acting like Gaga loved Bowie more than his own son did and like Gaga was more closely related to him therefor she's right and his son is wrong lol.

he didn't have to like the performance but he had no reason to be mean about her!

I personally didn’t like it. But…. If I recall, before Bowie passed, that performance was supposed to be a collaboration with LG (or Samsung, idr) and be like a tech heavy and innovative performance. However, Bowie’s death was so sudden that the performance idea was changed last minute. Hence the messiness of it. But you can still see some of the technological aspects that were supposed to be used in the original performance.

Ok, I've just watched it for the first time. I think it's great. She maybe didn't hit one or two high notes quite as well as the great man, but then he WAS one hell of a singer. It only strikes me now that they had something in common there : so much focus on their visuals and concepts maybe caused people to lose sight of the basic fact that they were both exceptionally good at singing.

I understand the criticism that she tried to do too much, and that maybe just one complete song would have been better. That was a choice on her part, one I agree with, because there was so much to Bowie, but yes, I understand that not everyone would like it.

As for Bowie's son, his criticism of the performance as a piece of art is valid, but no more valid than anyone else's imo. That's art for you. It's in the eye of the beholder and the ear of the listener. Separately, as a very recently bereaved person, his emotional involvement and reaction must have been very strong at the time. I'm sorry he didn't like the performance, but he was absolutely entitled.

He doesn't have to like, but going out of his way to get it off YouTube is pretty petty and pathetic

there is zero indication that he had it pulled off of YouTube, you are making assumptios to discredit his valid opinion. Bowie's entire music catalog and publishing rights are owned by Warner Music, not his son, so he has no control over any of his music, let alone a tribute performance.

And the performance was universally panned. But yea, I guess the whole world was just jealous of a dancing keyboard and an orange wig.

Funny how The Sound of Music and New York, New York weren't panned and nobody was jealous of her talent then, just months before.

As a huge Bowie fan as well, THIS. Or something like "Space Oddity/Life On Mars/Starman/Heroes"

That would've been amazing

I mean, yes the performance was a bit all over the place, but Gaga was just trying to pay homage to her idol and I think it's sad how she got so much backlash for it. The comments from Bowie's son must've made her feel like sh*t.

Honestly too literal and was blown up too much for it just being a bad face filter and moving piano

It was just too many ideas and most likely concepts thrown into one performance. It was pretty obvious by the end of it that that couldn’t be what was so hyped by Intel. They ended up without thaaaat much involvement versus what was originally planned from what I’ve always thought. I mean they hyped some next level inspired stuff, and at the end of the day the only unique technological aspects were the projections and the robotic piano.

Didn’t we have in a leaked doc or something that she was going to perform either a new song or a medley of her past hits with holograms of herself or something and some other cool stuff?? But she was so taken aback and creatively thrown when Bowie passed so somehow she ended up doing that performance. So I’m sure there were aspects from the original performance that were carried over, plus any new concepts for a tribute, plus cramming in so many songs, as others have said

DISCLAIMER: I still loved this performance and the unique aspects that it did bring
