US Congress Proposed Nationwide Tiktok Ban, Some States Started Partially Banning

A trio of US lawmakers has introduced new legislation that aims to ban TikTok from operating in the United States. 

The new bill by Sen. Marco Rubio, the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, and a bipartisan pair of congressmen in the House, reflects the latest escalation by US policymakers against the Chinese-owned short-form video app. TikTok has faced doubts about its ability to safeguard US user data from the Chinese government. 

The proposed legislation would "block and prohibit all transactions" in the United States by social media companies with at least one million monthly users that are based in, or under the "substantial influence" of, countries that are considered foreign adversaries, including China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela.

 

In the past two weeks, at least seven states have said they will bar public employees from using the app on government devices, including Alabama, Maryland, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah and Texas. (Another state, Nebraska, banned TikTok from state devices in 2020.)

State agencies in Louisiana and West Virginia on Monday became the latest to ban the use of the popular social media service TikTok on government-managed devices over concern that China could use it to track Americans and censor content.

Some 19 of the 50 U.S. states have now at least partially blocked access on government computers to TikTok, which is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance Ltd. Most of the restrictions came within the past two weeks.

In Louisiana, Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin said he banned TikTok on all devices his agency owns, citing potential security threats but without identifying any present issues. West Virginia State Auditor JB McCuskey said he did the same for his agency.

Some members of Congress last week proposed a nationwide ban, which would follow countries such as India that have already prohibited its use.

TikTok not being on devices that have access to US government databases and servers is probably a good thing. China is sketchy AF when it comes to cyberwarfare

Sad but true, if democrats ban tiktok they'll alienate a considerable percentage of young voters. I agree with the decision to ban it, but this is something I hope republicans will do

Banning TikTok is a show pony, fear mongering tactic to validate the older generation’s fear of technology and eliminating an impactful way that young people quickly share information. 

Make no mistake - this is more about politics at home than abroad. 

Remember when youth on TikTok disrupted one of Trump’s pep rallies? I assume Republicans didn’t like that.

Also, look at the states that the ban is active in. Republican, conservative states,

Why would Government employees have TikTok on their work phone anyway? They wouldn’t. Sure, ban it from work phones - you should be working anyway.

If someone in China is collecting information about Marketing, they will find other ways to do it and Congress knows it.

I mean. I trust US advertisers and corporations about as much as I trust the Chinese government and I hand over data to the former every second I'm on my phone so...

Government phones should be on secure networks regardless. And why would you have TikTok installed on a government phone anyway?

Besides, Marco Rubio (my senator and the author of this bill) is an evil f*cking moron if he supports something then it's worth second guessing or looking into to find his actual motives.

This is scary. And the fact that people in here are supporting it is also scary. A lot of people view it as a music app, but the algorithm is more centered around interests than monetization because of how they monetize in the first place. Which means that content doesn't need large user platforms in order to be shared widely or pay Tik Tok in order to be promoted. This is one of the ways the younger generation has started sharing information among it's campuses, cities, states, and even nationally. And blocking the app is nothing more than an attempt at censorship by Republicans after they got their asses handed to them last month. If you have the autonomy to own guns, you have the autonomy to own a app.
