FfFfFfFF 58,343
Video about a subject that doesn't talked about a lot, which is: the impact that a breakup of UK would have on NATO. In short, if Scotland and NI would become independent and would subsequently leave NATO, what would remain of UK will be in a very bad position. No more English bases in Scotland would mean Russian submarines would be able to pass through Greeland-Iceland-Scotland gap more easily toward the Atlantic Ocean. In the event of a war, Russia would have enahnced acces to the submarines transatlantic cables that connect North American and Europe. If they are damaned, that would be a massive blow to NATO because it would isolate the two halves of NATO and would leave Europe isolated from its security provider, the US. Also, if Scotland would leave the UK, 95% of UK's marine oil reserves would go to Scotland so the UK will no longer be energy independent.

berlinforme 5,385
Why wouldn't Scotland and Northern Ireland negotiate their NATO membership before leaving the UK? I understand that it might be offensive to the British government but after all it would be in everyone's best interest?
FfFfFfFF 58,343
Just now, berlinforme said: Why wouldn't Scotland and Northern Ireland negotiate their NATO membership before leaving the UK? I understand that it might be offensive to the British government but after all it would be in everyone's best interest? Ireland would likely join Ireland which has a policy of neutrality. On the other hand, Scotland might or might not join NATO, but the video says some Scottish officials said they want the British base at Faslane to be removed, so it seems Scotland isn't heading for a pro-Atlanticist future either.
