HUGE: Nuclear fusion energy gain achieved

"The net energy gain achievement applied to the fusion reaction itself, not the total amount of power it took to operate the lasers and run the project. For fusion to be viable, it will need to produce significantly more power and for longer."

And just like all these other amazing scientific breakthroughs we will never hear of it for another decade and no progressive use of it will be implemented. It's frustrating tbh

this could literally become the door opener to infinite sustainable energy but knowing our luck at the end of everything we'll punch ourselves for realizing that ten years of that developement earlier it could have actually prevented climate breakdown

When it takes a decade to properly do this safely and easily, it’d be worth it. Look out for France’s IGER in 2025 for the next huge serve. This does have the chance to be price gouged and abused by greed even tho everyone is currently selling it as a sorta socialist utopia (the way the films and science want it to be) but that’s a political/economic issue, not a scientific one

Why is my brain so damaged that every time I see an exciting scientific breakthrough these days I go straight to being cynical. Thinking things like 'they'll never let this actually happen' or ' they'll find a way to weaponize this and use it for war' or 'countries are going to fight over this technology' :bear:  I'm so negativity-poisoned

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

Guys I love the optimism here, and not to rain on anybody’s parade, but this is kind of like cancer or HIV vaccine research. You always keep seeing headlines that blow the news out of proportions.
Trust me, I’m a process engineer. This is a great development, but only a step forward in a very, very long path.

I’ve always liked nuclear energy when it’s utilized correctly. The output of power is unmatched, even with the nuclear waste byproduct. This is just an updated version without the nuclear waste part. How cool!! :firega:

Hmmmm I read we got net energy gain for the first time years ago and they made a bit deal about it

Now again????

Can you provide the source? My understanding is that they’ve set records for the amount of pressure achieved but never actual fusion ignition

You're just negative of a person, clearly.

I’m just a professional on the field, sharing perspective but thanks for your assumption lol

I tried searching up but it's only giving the recent articles of the past day

I'm sure there must be some difference in what they achieved now vs before for it to be news...

But it was definitely something Simmilar. About a net energy gain. So I know it's not totally the first time something of this type is achieved. At least not by all measurements

I think maybe before it might have been for a fraction of a second it yielded more than power output into it and now it's slightly different?

I don't know, it seems more like a progression on a Simmilar step already taken tho cuz Simmilar news was definitely put before

I distinctly remember it cuz I even made a thread about it on GGD

I think people are misinterpreting the results of this test. I like the flight analogy, this isn't a commercial flight from LA to NY, it's the wright brothers flying for 12 seconds. The wright brothers proved that it COULD be done, and it started the rat race to design better and more agile planes. The wright brothers first flight was in 1903, and it took only 16 years to have the first flight over the Atlantic.

This breakthrough proves that with better more efficient ways to start fusion ignition, we CAN get more out than we put in. It's now up to engineers across the world to bring us to the feasibility of large reactors for base power.
