Lol what are you talking about? Mexicans aren’t trying to annex California, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. And the US does deport people on a regular basis, but it’s a COMPLETELY different scenario. If a person is a refugee, they deserve to be documented properly. If a person is just coming in nilly willy, they accept the risk of getting deported. It is what it is. Nice try.

I'm not educated enough on this topic to not say something stupid if I get into specifics. So lemme just say I hope this is the best decision for Ukraine as well as every human in that territory just trying to live their lives.

Crimea had a significant population of Russians before the annexation in 2014 but from what I see, Ukraine clearly does not have anything to do with them (or else they would need to forcibly expel millions of people from Kharkiv, Donetsk etc.).

These people moved into an occupied territory, and I would find it hard to believe they received zero support from Putin in return so... They made their decision, now they have to face the consequences.

My country was the first in modern history to conduct a forced population exchange and it ruined my country forever so I know its traumatic. But Putin used the large number of Russians as an excuse to annex the region before, and I get that Ukraine doesn't want nearly 1 million people settled in the region in accordance with Putin's will.

Sadly it does not seem like there are enough of the Crimean Tatars left anymore except for in Uzbekistan and Crimea itself. The 200k+ Crimean Tatars in Crimea have also been forcefully enlisted into the Russian military to fight Ukraine and apparently their numbers have dwindled dramatically as they have been killed by the Ukrainian military as they were being used as canon fodder for the Russian military. There are reports that up to 90% of Crimean Tatar men in fighting age have sadly been forced by Russia to join the front lines against Ukraine. The women and the rest have apparently fled en mass to Turkey to avoid enlistment meaning their numbers have dwindled even more dramatically. This is basically another phase of the genocide of the Crimean Tatars by Russia.  

Basically, it's over for the Crimean Tatars...even the amount that were already present in Crimea. Their already struggling numbers are being wiped out because of this war. It's really sad.

In addition, Ukraine will not support the full return of Crimean Tatars who have fled to Turkey or that live in Uzbekistan (they were moved there by Stalin). Ukraine itself before the war was not so favorable towards the Tatars because they are muslim and were treating them like second class citizens too (though to a MUCH lesser degree than while under Russian rule). Their lives under Russia since 2014 has been a living hell whereas under Ukraine they at least had some semblance of respect.

Are you from Greece or Turkey by any chance? I'm assuming the modern forced population exchange you are talking about is the one between Turkey and Greece right? In some ways one can argue it did ruin things but it also did create more ethnically homogenous populations for both nations which ended up helping relations long term (as horrible and traumatic as it was). Greeks were using the fact that they had a sizable population in Anatolia to try to annex parts of it and Turks were using the same excuse for Thrace. The way things ended was terrible but for that time I think it might have helped as I genuinely believe Turkey and Greece would still be doing intense wars if they still had sizable amounts of people from the other ethnic group within the modern borders.

I am from Turkey yes. And although I agree the population exchange prevented the possibility of mass pogroms or wars (although not with 100% success) I'd rather live with indigenous Greeks with their rights protected under the constitution - the early 20th century was hardly the period to consider this option though. But well I'm a romantic 

I don't believe segregation of the communities is the answer for the Russians in Ukraine, nor a mass population exchange would be without any crimes against humanity. However these people who settled there most probably benefited from incentives awarded by the imperialists in Kremlin, and more importantly has been there for only 8 years. So we cannot really compare it with the case of Greece and Turkey.

Ukraine would still need to host observers from international organizations to ensure there's no abuse.
