FIFA's leadership has written to World Cup teams urging them to focus on the tournament in Qatar and not be part of lecturing on morality and dragging football "into every ideological or political battle that exists".

"Please, let's now focus on the football!" Infantino [the FIFA president] wrote to the 32 football nations contesting the World Cup. Infantino wrote: "At FIFA, we try to respect all opinions and beliefs, without handing out moral lessons to the rest of the world. (...) No one people or culture or nation is 'better' than any other."

My brothers are super into MLS and soccer so this topic often comes up in the family group chat (and they're also center-right at best)... they're not really vibing with the reactions FIFA and Qatar governments are having to the (wholly predictable) concerns people have about human rights

The official advice from FIFA is to present yourself as straight and basically "don't get into a situation where you could be accused of being gay" and if you can't "resist" that- don't come.

Recently, however, Qataar said that police might allow the presence of pride flags.

The saddest part of this all is that a massive portion of football fans have the exact same attitude, doesn't effect them so they don't care.

Respecting opinions and beliefs? No country or people is better? My god, they're delusional. LGBT peoples exist and deserve basic human rights like everyone else, that shouldn't be an opinion that's up for debate. And any country/culture who thinks otherwise IS worse than those that respect Human rights.
