Yeah it can have symbolism but anyone can come up with random lines, shapes and colours and give an inspirational description of it How do u think my severely art challenged skills managed to get a decent mark in art class in highschool? This particular piece isn't the best example, but he (Piet Mondrian) was involved in an art movement called De Stijl, also known as Neoplasticism. It consisted of geometrical shapes and primary colors. The historical aspect of it is probably what draws people towards it, or it could be the idea of using simple colors and lines in such a precise matter to create something like this.
