It’s been 4 years and I’m still wondering what these photos meant. 
 

was this possibly hinting at the original LG6 when it was called “Free Woman” before it became Chromatica?

They're original concept of Enigma, but somehow someone think their idea was more superior. Therefore we get what we get.

it was a photoshoot spread they did for KING KONG magazine, but it got scrapped so Eli probably just let her post them since they were never gonna get used for anything just so she had insta content.

he shot 8 cover spreads for them and this was the shoot he did with Dove Cameron before Gaga posted hers;

it's the same aesthetic, i think Gaga just decided to heavily manipulate some of the pics on her own when he wasnt using them. Plus in THIS one photo (below) you can see him working on editing for the magazine and you can clearly see one of the pics he took of her on the desk.

but for some reason, this fanbase isn't obsessed with it like the original LG5. i'll never understand the hatred for Paul, he made some of our most favourite music.

As others have mentioned, it was for the residency. I have a feeling that Gaga was originally inspired by the underbelly of Vegas as the theme for her show, which I would of loved tbh. In the run up to the announcement (circa The Cure) Gaga's looks were very reminiscent of Nomi in Showgirls, a film that is purely about the sleaziness of Vegas, and even this shoot with Eli seems to take inspiration from 00's glamour models and has an off key feeling about it.

The magazine 'receipts' don't disprove this shoot also being the original direction for 'Enigma' though.

Eli has confirmed that the shoot was for Gaga's original 'Enigma' concept that he talked her out of.

My personal view is that Eli used the shoot as a reference for his work with King Kong, hence why it was on the desk when the covers were being edited. I don't think it was ever 'for' King Kong.

i guess she wasn't really finalised on the idea then if eli managed to change the concept so easy

Yeah, that's my take. 

She hit up Eli to work on some creatives for Enigma. I guess she told him her idea (to call her residency "Enigma" and to present herself as one throughout the show in a dark, creepy, hyperrealist way) - they shot this now infamous shoot to the test the waters and experiment with this idea. Gaga announced "Enigma" on 7th August and a week later, she shared this shoot to tease her being an "Enigma" and what that meant to her creatively.

Somewhere along the line, Eli convinced Gaga to go in a very different direction. He then, presumably with Gaga's permission, used the original shoot they did as a reference for his work with King Kong magazine. 

I do think it's a real shame that Gaga's original concept was shelved. Even if it wasn't fully formed, the idea of naming her residency "Enigma" and then portraying herself as one throughout it would've been 100x better than what we got. And what we got was almost entirely led by Eli. He set out his vision for the story, stage and fashion. Gaga obviously liked it and was happy to let go of her original idea for whatever reason. I suspect Eli convinced her that her initial concept was too dark for Vegas and not in the spirit of what Vegas represents. Oh well.
