Having transitions or cohesion alone doesn’t make a concept album. GKMC is a tale of Kendrick’s teenage years. American Idiot has characters: Jesus of Suburbia, St. Jimmy and more. The Wall follows a rock star who had a bad childhood. Black Parade is a tale of a dying cancer patient.

Top 10 is generally good and I’m surprised Idiot is that high even if it’s one of my favorite albums of all time.

how they define a "concept" album? like Lemonade? like, cohesive?  i'm confused

isn't CHROMATICA a concept album? with it's interludes and such?

Tied together by the a particular theme/lyrics/melody...it's a very nebulous term. Honestly, the only Gaga album that could be considered a concept album, imo, is Chromatica (even though TFM/TF were arguably about 'Fame'). I'm not even sure Lemonade would be considered a concept album because while the theme is rather consistent, the music mixes a ton of different genre...maybe Renaissance, though.

"concept albums" were always innovative and special so fans/artists/critics now want to pin the term to any album they like... A great example of a concept album is Bowie's "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars".

Fans can cry all they want, Gaga's albums are not concept albums. Having an idea behind the music does not immediately mean the end product is a concept album. But most fans know that the term "concept album" is something fancy and admirable, so suddenly everything and anything is a concept album.

I...don't think anyone thinks Gaga does concept albums? Maybe Chromatica, but even that's a stretch. TBH none of the major names have really done concept albums in the past several years, though I think Renaissance could arguably qualify as one.

Very nice to see Once Upon a Time (Donna Summer) and Kid A (Radiohead) on this list, two of my all time favorites.  However, Control (another of my all time favorite albums) doesn't belong on this list because it's not a concept album.

Born This Way is not a concept album. I think Melodrama is but I could be wrong.

nor is folklore as well

Unless I’m mistaken, a concept album is a really vague term meaning that all songs on the album center around a singular theme. I think one could argue many albums these days to be a “concept album” but some are more cohesive than others. BTW is centered around the themes of accepting yourself and sexual liberation, which was groundbreaking at the time for how popular its message was.  Folklore’s theme is literally folklore (storytelling). The songs are meant to blend reality and fiction and flow like a stream of consciousness, each song telling different stories that speak in conversation to one another.

Oriane

ARTPOP is a concept album, I did an analysis of the album storyline that ties the songs together some years ago, I can find it again if anyone is interested.
