So after its annexation in 2014, Putin built Russia's longest bridge ever to connect Crimea with mainland russia. It holds symbolic value for his regime. It's symbolic, but it also has major impact on the war in general. Think of it as the equivalent of a major rail system being destroyed, or a major airport, that was used to supply goods to an army in a war. Russia has far more people to throw on the front line (some of those fighting are unwilling, even) and so can overwhelm Ukraine in terms of numbers. So one of the main ways Ukraine can stop the war is to make it to difficult (expensive, time consuming, etc.) for Russia to keep supplying their forces versus a 'conventional' defeat. If you can't get food and weapons to your troops-or you can but it's insanely expensive-the war then becomes untenable. Putin is probably going to lose his sh*t.
