“Lyle Lyle Crocodile” starring Shawn Mendes narrowly beat “Amsterdam” featuring an ensemble cast that includes Taylor Swift on the Thursday box office previews.

Lyle Lyle is expected to rake in anywhere between $12M to $18M this weekend while Amsterdam is estimated to pull less than $10M. Budget for the former is $50M while the latter was made with $80M.

Can we stop attributing whole movies to people who are barely in the film and/or not involved in acting?

Shawn provides the singing voice for Lyle, a character who is otherwise mute when he is not singing therefore Shawn is only actually in less than 1/3 of the film. The fact the he is given a lead credit is purely for marketing purposes/a reward for his involvement with the music. Taylor is barely in Amsterdam, it is essentially an extended cameo. The only reason she’s been featured in trailers and posters is, similar to Shawn, because her name is marketable.

It just feels like weird attempts at dragging when the celebrity in question is hardly consequential enough to a film for it to be called theirs.

Tell this to their respective fans who are crediting the success to Shawn and saying Taylor will win best supporting actress for this movie.

I have been telling this to any I come across on Twitter for ages. It's really a stupid sentiment on both respects. It was stupid when people called TGM a Gaga film. The only thing this works for is calling Don't Worry Darling Harry's film because he's a lead in it. For all these other glorified cameos, it just doesn't work.

Railing

I guess people find the soft/high-pitched voice of Shawn Mendes coming from a crocodile to be more goofy & entertaining than Taylor Swift getting run over by a car :S You never know these days

I get your point but TGM is Gaga’s film. It shows up on her box office page, with the gross accounting for her lifetime gross.

That's only because of how she's credited, in this case on the production side. She is credited a composer, which all things considered demonstrates no ownership of the film, especially when she isn't the primary composer. The same thing will be true for Shawn with LLC, it will go on his lifetime grosses and on his box office page. But unless someone is directing, producing, or starring in a substantial way then it truly is not their film. Gaga and Shawn and Taylor for Amsterdam fit none of those roles.

Someone having a credited cameo in a film will also make it appear on their box office page and in their lifetime gross. As an example, Hugh Jackman's 10 second, one line cameo in X-Men: First Class--I don't believe Hugh Jackman is actually credited but say for example and discussion purposes he is--would go onto his box office page and into his lifetime gross despite him being in the film for only 10 seconds. But because he would have a credit, they would include it.

That doesn't make XM:FC his film however.
