French Millionaire Dentist Jailed For Giving Unecessary Treatments

A multimillionaire French dentist was jailed on Thursday for “wiping the smiles off the faces” of hundreds of patients by maiming them with expensive, unnecessary and harmful treatments to boost his earnings.

On Thursday, the criminal court in Marseille, southern France, handed Guedj an eight-year prison term. His father and accomplice, Carnot, 71, also a dentist, received a five-year prison term.

Most of his patients were from impoverished council estates in north Marseille and were on low incomes, so were able to claim the cost of the dental care back from the social security system, the court was told.

Lionel Guedj, 42, had promised patients "celebrity smiles".

Instead, he killed the nerve of 3,900 healthy teeth in pointless root canal treatment between 2006 to 2012, causing many of his patients to develop serious dental problems after rushed and botched work by Guedj, who saw up to 70 people a day.

Some said the trauma from teeth and bridges that fell out and chronic pain and infections led to social problems and even divorce.

Meanwhile, Guedj drove a Ferrari and owned a €700,000 yacht, paintings by Andy Warhol, three flats in Paris, two in the Alps and a block of flats in Perpignan in southern France.

At one point, he was the “wealthiest dentist in France”, raking in €2.9 million in 2010 alone.

Terrible what some dentists do. This happen in USA too. That's why people need to have 2nd or even 3rd opinion from other dpctors/dentists/physicians/etc. before undergoing any big treatmens aka surgery. You may find a decent doctor during this time that might safe you from incoming trouble.

I be so scared my dentist is gonna do this too me. Kinda feel lucky to be seeing a dentist, so I let him take a look. One time I asked my dentist for my x rays cause the guy im seeing wanted to take a look. He thought I was gonna go to another dentist and I told him that another dentist wanted to see it and he never gave the pictures…

That's why I like my dentist place. Multiple dentists work there and sometimes they spot eachother for patients if one is busy. 

 

I feel like there's a lower chance of 1 making up a cavity u don't have etc when so many can see charts and x-rays etc... It's not impossible to have a conspiracy with so many but definitely harder I would think

 

I've also been told about small formong cavities I have and shown on x-ray and was told because it had not yet gone thru enamel if I was careful they may close on their own. So no procedure ended up ever being done

I just booked a dentist appointment this morning and the dentist I've had for over 25 years has gone so I'll have someone new, I just hope they're good (although mine was going to charge £1000 for a procedure last year)
