She can sing. I don’t understand why one snippet of a performance all of sudden means she “can’t sing” or that she was “never able to sing.” I swear, the way people react to things on social media nowadays drives me insane.

First of all, this clip is not THAT bad. Is it good? Not really, but it’s not the worse singing in the world. But even if it was just god awful, it can be a number of things. Maybe she was sick, maybe she was nervous, maybe was something with her in-ears, or maybe she was just having an off performance. Either way, it doesn’t take away from the fact that she can sing. It’s like the people who really tried saying people like Mariah Carey or Adele “can’t sing” because of a bad performance…like come on now

EDIT - And before anyone quotes me, I’m not comparing Olivia to Mariah or Adele. I’m saying that using a bad part of a performance doesn’t do an artist justice.

This is not the first video of her live vocals being bad. I’ve seen maybe like 2 other ones go viral now too. Yeah, she’s not the best vocalist or live performer but literally no one is claiming, or has ever claimed she was lol. 

Her voice is weak yet decent enough that it can be made to sound quite good with studio production. She made it big cause she’s young, super cute, easily marketable image and can sing songs that appeal to a huge audience of kids and teenagers - not cause she’s a powerhouse vocalist or stage performer. She is not the first or only pop girly who cannot sing that well. I shan’t name names but there are/has been a few other pop stars out there with a similarly meh vocal ability, yet are a great package otherwise.

However, this is also why I get the hate for actual non-singers getting deals and the hate train towards DJ Khaled as a producer.

The money spent on them by their labels could have gone to someone more talented and more creative who's struggling for a breakthrough like Stefani in 2006.

Singing well isn’t always easy. It’s a formula of a bunch of different factors. One bad performance hardly means someone can’t sing.

I'll stay here and hope maybe she can find herself a coach. I like her album but I remember first time I saw her live good 4 u she get all breathy and I hate it so much.

And some ppl says "she's an entertainer" yeah and since her vocal were that breathy it's not entertaining to me at all.

There's literally nothing wrong here? It's at a lower register so of course it sounds weak. Plus singing -talking. She can sing really well actually, for the people who keep saying she can't  Look up at her early piano performances like Edge of Glory.  People need to stop underestimating newer artists. She still has a lot of time to improve, through what? Well, one of those is proper criticism yet I see some like... Ad Hominem
