Debithius 5,532
I was inspired by the title of @Blackout19rating thread, Witness vs ARTPOP. So, it dawned on me that Witness and most flop era albums don't even come close to ARTPOP and that is because although ARTPOP was a "flop" commercially, it was also still successful in creating headlines, impact and music history in an unexpected way as I am looking back it. Most flop albums will usually fade away very quickly and people will end up forgetting about the existence of a particular flop album but not ARTPOP. The division was so freakishly strong that people even to this day, almost 10 years later, still argue wether it is her best work or not. ARTPOP has to be the THE riskiest album released by a MPG in recent decades, especially because of what was expected from Gaga. People like to compare Witness to ARTPOP but that is literally a disservice to ARTPOP. It is leagues above Witness in every way and I am basing this on an outsiders perspective. I don't know, ARTPOP is such a mixed bag and the entire era was so controversial to the point where it probably ended up becoming her best era for the right and wrong reasons. Benji 20,113
I’d agree to that, I think ARTPOP is probably Gaga’s weakest album BUT it is still leagues above Witness (Excluding Roulette, Miss Perry slayed with that one)
Blackout19 10,581
Both of them in some way ”flop”, of course for the fans it was different. But even if the ”flop”, they have some good songs, so that way I make album battle. Vino cu noi în bucătărie, adu cu tine și o farfurie.

Honestly I think Born This Way was much riskier. The topics, the aesthetic, the expectations after how massive The Fame (Monster) was. ARTPOP just had a hard time because of how over the top, camp and kinda pretentious her public appearances were at the time. I absolutely loved the entertaining mess that the ARTPOP rollout was but the album didn't really deliver what she promised. That & the management/team issues were quite the perfect storm for her as a brand and as a person. The album itself is great, fun pop music but to me it doesn't stand out compared to her other work. It’s absolutely remarkable at the peak of her career she thrown all of that attention onto LGBT+ rights. A huge, huge risk.

AlabasterBones 238
No Katy album can be compared to any Gaga album, period. Lmao. They’re not in the same lane. And fwiw, I ****ing love Katy. Even Katy’s best album does not hold a candle to Gaga’s worst album (which is not ARTPOP😁)
nATAH 43,219
the thing is, ARTPOP as an album was never a flop. it just sold less than born this way but the media didn't care and just screamed flop at the top of their lungs, the bar was a lot higher for gaga than her peers mother, what must i do? holy scheisse 21,698
I don’t think releasing ARTPOP was “risky” like releasing born this way was risky tbh. ARTPOP was edm 2 years into that being the mainstream genre in pop. but that’s not to say it isn’t a great album. The era was a total **** show though lol

The sound doesn't matter lol. It's the content and the way it's presented. For someone of her magnitude it is the riskiest album in recent decades.
