Meat 18,962
It won’t even be shortlisted let alone nominated. This just means that it is eligible to be submitted because they released it in a theatre. The short film category is a serious category for serious filmmakers. They aren’t going to nominate a music video about some girl’s teenage relationship among those heavyweights On another note, Kendrick Lamar’s “We Cry Together” is also eligible and is a way more artistic option if they wish to nominate a music video at all. He’s a Pulitzer Prize winner and a previous Oscar nominee so that automatically puts him leagues above Taylor.

Nathan 2,079
Tbh this is pretty ****, it’s a music video (a good one) but it shouldn’t be eligible in this category. Having big singers music videos nominated here will wildly overshadow talent from smaller creators (which is who the category is for). I don’t know that much about the Oscars, is it all fake like the Grammys?

Honestly Oscars should remain about movies while music videos have the VMAs. We know Oscars ratings are sinking a bit more each year since a while... They added some viewers with big names in the original song noms and now it's one more trick they prepare imo. It gonna deserves little creators who needed this exposure badly I fear. StrawberryBlond 15,061
It merely says it's eligible for consideration, doesn't mean its even reached the shortlist yet. But yeah, music videos being treated as short films gets us into dicey territory where singers could end up taking the bulk of nominations away from genuine filmmakers if this becomes a thing. I really don't know why this video has gained so much praise. It's a video that was just made recently for a song written 9 years ago and is just an angsty song about a teenage relationship that only lasted 3 months. It's not an interesting video or an original concept and is mostly all song, considering it's just under 15 minutes and the song in it is 10 minutes. It also includes just under 2 minutes of credits at the end. This is a music video, not a film. And yes, Gaga totally deserves it more for MTN, bonus points for the fact she was actually starring in it. But the fact she's been nominated for actual proper film-based content is way better, of course. 13 hours ago, COOOK said: A music video under the pretenses of a short film like many artists have done before, released in 2021, and qualifies for a 2023 Oscar... two times AOTY for the same album... It's like the industry bends itself and goes above and beyond to reward her. Or am I not seeing something that Taylor and her team only see? and this screams desperation tbh. I like her music but damn, this all seems too bizarre Good point, the Oscars have their nomination guidelines based on a calendar year, so the best in film from January-December in any given year. Hence, if this were to be nominated, it would've been eligible for this year's ceremony. But what do you mean by 2 times AOTY for the same album? Her re-recordings aren't eligible for Grammy nominations. Unless you're referring to something else?
androiduser 7,438
before anyone starts harassing Taylor and her fans over this, and wondering why Gaga wasn't nominated for her videos, films have to be premiered and played in cinemas to even qualify for the awards season. Taylor's short film premiered at the AMC Theatres in Lincoln Square, New York City, on November 12, and had a limited theatrical release in major cities. It also received a special screening at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 11, 2022. Gaga's videos were not played in cinemas and weren't even eligible for anything. For sure this is just a ploy to get an Academy Award nomination, but see how you immediately thought a Gaga video was a better contender and it didn't even meet the guidelines. So it is her team ‘ s intention from the start to compete in this category. Will it get norminated ? No one knows. But it opened the door for other musicians to compete in this category .I am amazed no other musicians have thought about it before, premier your music video or short film in a theatre or a festival and then voila, with a big celebrity name attached,it increases your chance of getting nominated .Small filmmakers are essentially ****ed.
