Through her own words, Problematique is her true debut album, since she consider Clarity, her first release album more like a mixtape. And Turn Off the Light is just a Halloween special.

It's the most recently scrapped "debut" album. She has done like 3-4 albums worth since signing to Republic and now is starting another. They are chasing a viral hit before they release an album it seems - since each time a single fails to chart super high they scrap the album that was being worked on. Cycle started with Malibu in 2020 and here we are now - meanwhile they thought Sl*t Pop was a good idea...

Makes sense, I don't think they're gonna get a viral hit if that's what they want. Coconuts was a great opportunity to begin the official rollout for an album. :air:

But at least now I know why nothing really came out after that (besides Slut Pop ofc) - Thanks!

Coconuts too was going viral and Kim had to beg her label to release it officially and it took a little too long though so they lost a lot of potential streams. Kim has been posting sad text posts about the status of the album for months and having to back track on them each time because it seems like she gets in trouble with the label every time she does. It's all so ridiculous.

For real? that's terrible  they finally got what they wanted only to ruin it for themselves!

I remember when she was going solo, I instantly loved her when I discovered her in 2017. I get the feeling she doesn't like her record label but can't speak out at all. It's sad to see honestly :messga:

genuinely sad for her, she's truly talented and it wouldn't be the first time a label has crushed a talent:saladga:

I guess I don’t really understand. She’s had a lot of success with songs in the gay community as well as within her respective fanbase. Is it really THAT important to get a billboard hit before supporting her more? There are so many moderate hit artists that continue to put out great bodies of work despite a lack of gp appeal. It’s never meant that they’re bad by any means, but their demographic is simply a little more niche than the casual listener.

Been a cuff touple, a puff bupple, a tough couple of years.

Republic is a terrible label for developing artists. They really only are good at serving high level artists and do not care about their up and coming ones or lower performing ones - they'd rather keep them in development hell than have a "flop".

Part of the equation that seems to be missing is the Dr. Luke of it all. It seems he has more power in their working relationship than let on. Just because there isn't any public information of any contract between the two of them it would appear that the is some kind of red tape with them in ways we don't know. A lot of people say how she is willingly working with him, but tbh anything said publicly by any involved party is to be taken with a grain of salt when peoples pay checks are on the line. She is trans German immigrant who came her on a tourist visa and managed to network her way into the industry and pull off a working visa.

There is 100% things going on behind the scenes and legal docs that we don't know about that would shine a lot of light on the situation - but one thing thing is evident. Kim has been made to do A LOT of things she is not happy with regarding her career and every time she even HINTS at this she is then forced to back track and contradict herself. It's really a stickier and stickier situation the deeper you look into it.

That’s unfortunate… the couple songs I was interested in did leak so at least I can hear it, but her label seems like a mess… especially given that they figured sl*t pop was a good idea over anything else…

See? That’s what happens when you support abusers. Leave that label/management and hire non-rápists, do collabs with bigger names within your pop sphere (Rina, Charli, Tove, etc.) and score yourself a hit album. Your success is waiting for you, Kim. Until then, well,…

This is an oversimplification of the situation that really lacks perspective of both how the music industry works and what the time frame of events was.

Given Kim started recording in 2016 with Aaron Joseph and it was Luke who put them on a publishing deal with him (and that is part of why is he is credited on nearly every single on of her songs.) She is legally tied to him - even before she put pen to paper on her first single - a big part of her signing to Republic is likely due to Dr. Luke due to him joining Republic at the same time. She never has been as "independent" of an artist as talk pieces make it seem. At the end of the day she managed to get a break in the music industry here in the US and then Kesha went public around the same time.

People like to bring up the "I wouldn't work with someone I think is an abuser" quote all the time - but she was fresh and lacked media training and of course wouldnt't dare jeopardize her career and say "Yeah I think the man I have contracts with is an abuser" because quite frankly she would see herself in the same position as Kesha trying to get out of a contract. In recent interviews she is more coy about whether she would work with him again saying "maybe, maybe not" which is quite frankly probably the most she is contractually able to get away with saying.

Artists just do not have that kind of power and autonomy over their career when they start working in the conventional music industry standards. You sign your life away and and have to then be the face and pretend you have all the power. Unless you're an artist making music literally at home and just posting it - then you are likely tied into some kind of contract. Even before you start work on your first song. If you're lucky it may be a contract you can wait out or somehow break, but the more work you do the more locked in you become because the legal work keeps coming.
